“Between those guys, you’ve just got two guys that really increase our depth on defence and they do it differently,” he said. “But both bring value in their strengths.”

I don’t think Schenn or ZAR will play too much.

Even if they make no moves they’ve replaced Engvall, Holmberg and Malgun with ROR, Acciari and Lafferty and replaced Muzzin, Sandin and Benn with McCabe, Gustafson and Schenn.

ZAR will be replaced by Knies.

The sandin trade in the long run is the only one I’m concerned about hurting.

To be fair, I have not seen Gus play this year. maybe he’s become somewhat passable on defense?? ? ????

He’s Pat Mahomes on the PP

But I can’t envision him as a playoff warrior

He’s better on PP than Rielly

We'll ignore every other year because we know how that's going to look, so we'll just look at this somewhat unlucky Morgan Rielly year vs the 2nd greatest year of Gustafson's life.

PP P/60

Rielly - 4.95
Goose - 4.66

Poor Goose.

Leaf fans forget the reality of playoff hockey because we lose in the first round every year. But the goal is to play extremely competitive, physical games every 2nd night for two freakin' months. You need a 7-8 and probably even 9 d-man in case of injuries. You would much prefer Jordie Benn to be the 9 or 10 guy.

I have no objection to having Luke Schenn on-hand as extra defensive depth for the playoffs.

But I also have no faith in Keefe keeping him in that role instead of inserting him into our top-6 ahead of better defensemen.

So yes, Dubie almost always does what I would do, but these latest moves make little sense to me.

The Engvall dump isn’t good no matter how I look at it. He was a really good player for us, I’m not listening to all this stuff about butter soft and turnovers. The guy was legit difficult to play against, could carry the puck, and has ability to pop 20. Lose him for a 3rd before a playoff run when a major team concern is scoring depth from the bottom 6? I don’t get it at all. If the trade was ZAR for a 6th, that I’d understand. This worsened us.

Sandin I can understand trading, but I don’t really agree with it. I’m not a huge Holl fan, and he’s gone next year anyway. I prefer Sandin’s ability to skate and move the puck, chip in offense, than Holl’s ability to shut anyone down and properly get the puck out of our zone. But fine, you expect you’ll only have him next year and need to trade him anyway and someone will give you a 1st now, ehhh, alright. But we just talked about how late 1sts are mostly dog shit, so why ditch a guy who could play ably and who was signed through next year for that now? If he was a main piece of the Meier trade, that makes a lot more sense to me.

I have to believe both Sandin and Engvall were moved to create space for something better that hasn’t arrived yet. If not, they were unnecessary downgrades for mostly irrelevant consideration for a team going for the cup.

The Schenn trade is worrisome, but with Sandin gone I’m not sure who he’d bump, if anyone. If Lilly is ever scratched for him, then fuck Keefe to hell. But he’s not bumping Rielly, McCabe, Gio, Brodie. So maybe Holl if he dips, I dunno. But I am legit shocked at Schenn’s offensive output. And a +9 on that team, where I’d expect something similar to OEL’s -22. Maybe he’s actually been good this year. We’ll find out.

But first let’s see the next big move. I’m quite concerned that this has been way too much turnover for a team going into the last leg of the season though…

Also, have to believe that there’s no way ZAR survives this late purge.

Kerf, ZAR, and maybe even Holl now with Schenn here, might all be out the door if there’s a more significant name incoming still.

The Sandin deal is interesting. Def saved themselves a headache going into the offseason. At this point Dubas should be going all in and move that Boston pick. No reason to keep it with this much on the line.

should he get a goalie? Who is out there that would be an upgrade on Sammy or Murray? Would be pretty tough to lose in round 1 again because our goalie got outplayed again.

so I've had a day to sleep on yesterday's shenanigans, and I still hate the Schenn move. Engvall I can live with, but don't love if the plan is now to play ZAR. hopefully Dubie has more moves coming.
