No one is trying to pass him off as a first liner. As a third liner, who is consistent, can control play, be excellent defensively, chip in 15+ goals - like what else do we want? Fucking Kampf? ZAR?

Liljegren 1.9 vs Schenn 0.3 = -1.6 net

Total = -2.5 net


Sandin 1.4 vs McCabe 0.8 = -0.6 net but given differences in usage lets call that one even for now.

Weakening your roster by 2.5 wins on deadline day is something.

Everyone agrees the team is still very good, and plausibly the best leafs team yet.

Pressure is higher now. They're so close to winning and something as little as trading away the glue guy who plays difficult minutes in your bottom 6 could cost you a cup. We're talking fractions here; it all matters. And frankly they could have done something that adds 2.5 wins. They weren't all that restricted to do so. It's frustrating.

His model, like many others, suffers greatly from undervaluing difficult usage. It kills the model for me tbh. Context is crucial with all of these nerdies.

That's the other thing. It was maybe the one deadline we've basically ever seen where it was a buyer's market? Almost endless names for sale because few teams are really challenging the top dogs in the east who got into a personal arms race. And we ditched two good, home grown, performing role players and brought in or retained pure shitheads who shouldn't be able to crack our lineup.

Frankly, I only really think Schenn and Gus shouldn't be able to crack the lineup when completely healthy.

Losing him.. okay whatever I can forgive because you can't cut his salary in half. But they could sure as hell have traded for someone else with retention. Nothing was stopping them... And they had a 1st round pick to do so, which was gold at this year's deadline. They decided not to for what reason? If there's one thing that will sink this current roster it's gonna be goal scoring depth. We knew that before they traded engvall and we know that even more now.
