No after they picked up McCabe and Lafferty. They were 1.1-1.2ish over the cap with 13 F and 8 D. Or rather that’s what they needed to clear to activate Murray.

Drop ZAR to keep Engvall and they only needed to get rid of less than $500K to keep him - while carrying 9 dmen for some reason.

13F 8D (Reilly, McCabe, Brodie, Gio, Holl, Sandin, Lilly, Timmins). At no point could they be cap compliant with Engvall and still doing the Sandin/Schenn trades.

But exactly. So they had to dump someone. ZAR wasn't enough.

You are keeping Engvall instead of Ras? Thats pretty bad.

the 22 year old, skilled dman was one of the worst candidates on the team to use as a salary dump. They also could’ve kept Engvall if they traded Willy.

just trading Engvall would have been way better.

So that Debrusk wanted out due to lack of usage and Boston said no. Now he's better than ever with them. we weaken ourselves potentially against Boston to accommodate Sandin's trade request at age 22.

At this point I might be ok letting him go *if* there's a decent replacement. And no, Winning a round' won't change anything. I feel embarrassed for fans who brag about winning a 1st round. Back in 02 Leaf fans were laughed at for celebrating a trip to the conf. finals.
 
I am not as high on Engvall as some on here; however the Sandin move made no sense IMO. Even if he did request a trade; we essentially downgraded our team for a future asset that we did not use for our current run. Why?
 
Engvall was gone in the summer. i'm ok with him going. Sandin..omg 22 years old 1st rounder. We spend 4 years developing him then trade him as he' s getting close to his prime years.

I think that’s a bit overboard. Steen was an established good player. Sandin has really struggled with tougher matchups and his first few games as a capital has been much the same.

And a first round pick >> Lee stempniak.
 
The odds of a late 1st playing 900 NHL games are pretty low. At least we could use Stempniak's 20 goals in the bottom 6.

Why do we weaken our forwards to keep 9 active dmen again?

And we lost Ras too....not sure your poijt there.

It’s not that low. And the value needs to be assessed relatively. A career one dimensional offensive 3rd liner vs a first.
