The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

it's funny cuz I remember as a kid every old school talking head talking about shots and shot quality every game. but now they pretend it never happened.
harry was a big proponent of “scoring chances”. Dude was 30 years ahead of the game.

It added a new dimension to the game for me. Something else to think about/look for. It's fun. But I'm a nerd who happens to like hockey.

While I personally see the value in nerdies it kinda took the joy out of how we used to view the game.
I'd blame that less on nerdies and more on years of not making the playoffs followed by years of getting knocked out of first round.

These days winning game 56 doesn't mean a lot to me. Good nerdies or bad.

I actually enjoy doing in game eye test comparisons with NST and moneypuck but I also appreciate the pov of my kid who doesn't give a shit how they won

let's not forget how often we were told that the Sens were outplaying our plucky, gritty Leafs back during the battles of Ontario

It’s definitely been a nagging thought in the back of my head for a while now that this Leaf team is the modern incarnation of the Alfredsson Senators.

If a goal was scored, but it wasn't xPected, should it even count?

Discuss.
But if the goals weren't expected it has very high predictability on what comes next! If the Leafs win the first round with a 35% xgf%, that's not impossible or surprising in a 7 game sample. But it would substantially increase the likelihood of them losing vs Boston in the next round. It's a good gauge on how well a team is playing. Enough sample size now to figure that out.. Those who win cups usually win expected cups too.

So that's a no. : )

An unXpected goal = a welcome surprise.

#surpassingxPectations.

absolutely.

what makes it sting extra though is that its not just that doing nothing on the actual deadline day would probably have been better, but that they had a legit opportunity to trade for ANOTHER legit quality forward (like at least a quality middle six guy if not better) and seemed set up perfectly to do just that.

heck, even do all those deadline moves but make the return for Sandin and Engvall an actual good forward instead of picks and Gus.

How much more is a Wilson, Mantha/Oshie -50%, or Strome than Sandin & stuff? Not arguing for any of those particular players, but just in general. A good or better middle 6 forward on a decent enough contract. Can't see the cost being out of that range at all.

The answer to this really bugs me. We wanted a bottom 9 with ZAR & Lafferty. Actively valued it and obtained it.

Because now they can't bullshit about it to fit their pre determined narrative.

"yeah, I know that the shots are 60-25, but it's the quality of shots that matter!"

Cmon mitchy wants 100. It’s like the longer you do this coaching thing tbe more babcockian you get.
Not uncommon at all to throw caution to the wind and try insane things when you know you're about to be disemboweled screaming FreeeScheeennnn!

Leafs runs from 2019-2022 combined xgf% ranking:

5v5 - 4th
all situations: 5th

5v5 splits
19-20 - 5th ( Columbus 20th)
20-21 - 3rd (Habs 10th)
21-22: 9th (Tampa 10th)

All situations splits
19-20 - 11th ( Columbus 17th)
20-21 - 4th (Habs 12th)
21-22: 7th (Tampa 6th)

Conclusion:

we're fucking cursed

their stars weren't as good as ours.
