The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

To be fair, the difference-maker for the Oilers is that they were able to do the deal with essentially no retained salary.

Not sure there was really any way for us to pull that off with Ekholm’s 3x$6.25M deal.

Still, it is a real piss off that Holland pulled off a great deal for exactly what the Oilers needed instead of the usual Duncan Keith/Kris Russell-esque trash he acquires.

Barrie is a form of retained salary tho for next year

Well, the good news in this game is what needed to happen in this game against the top team in the league, happened. Well, aside from the top forwards not scoring, which is gonna be a concern until they truly come through in the playoffs.

But otherwise, Sammy looked solid and confident in there.

McCabe - Brodie
Gio - Holl

Were both not just good but great pairings in this one.

And Mo - Schenn, and especially Schenn, were very bad literally from the first shift to the last, and then Schenn cost them the game with the unskilled giveaway (and of course not being able to get back to the front of the net in time). So much so that he may have even benched Schenn the rest of the way.

So the only question now is whether Keefe will be stubborn and double down on playing a liability ahead of what may be his best all around dman, or if he's willing to be humble and learn.

Stay tuned.

I expect Lilly to get another regular season game or two in but I also fully expect Schenn to play more than him in round one.

rielly is a problem.

they need to find a caretaker for him and the only guy who works is a guy who thry want to use for matchups. They’ll need to abandon that I think.
Gio-holl has been great all year.
Let’s see more McCabe-Lilly.

The problem with Mo is usage. You want him to be on the ice with Matthews as much as possible because that is where he is at his best. But then you risk exposing him to other teams top talent and as we've seen that never goes well. Optimizing Mo is not so easy I think. But I'm 100% sure that saddling him with Schenn is bad for all involved. Really bad. Nightmarish. You cannot hide that guy against the Boston's of the world.

100%.

But it’s been the same thing with everybody he has played with aside from Brodie.

They obviously thought Mo-Boosh was some kind of great success since they went out and got Boosh 2.0 so they could make the exact same pair this year. I wouldn't count on Keefe learning any lessons here. Mo-Schenn is going to the pairing for game 1.

Rielly Combos this year (everything here is minimum 30min)

1. Giordano-Rielly 48min, 61.7xgf%
2. Rielly-Sandin 49min, 61.7xgf%
3. Rielly-Brodie 331min, 55.7xgf%
4. Rielly-Benn 74min, 52.6xgf%
5. Rielly-Holl 170min, 49.8xgf%
6. Rielly-Lilly 189min, 48.6xgf%
7. Rielly-Schenn 87min, 47.0xgf%
8. Rielly-Gustafsson 43min, 42.0xgf%

last year

1. Rielly-Holl 48min, 63.5xgf%
2. Rielly-Lilly 146min, 61.6xgf%
3. Rielly-Boosh 288min, 54.0xgf%
4. Rielly-Brodie 810min, 52.3xgf%
5. Rielly-Sandin 51min, 40.4xgf%
6. Rielly-Dermott 92min, 37.7xgf%

previous year

1. Rielly-Dermott 65min, 62.5xgf%
2. Rielly-Bogosian 32min, 55.9xgf%
3. Rielly-Brodie 827min, 54.7xgf%
4. Rielly-Holl 75min, 47.5xgf%

unfortunately i can't get zone splits for pairings on EH, but note that the Schenn/Boosh/Bogo pairings are amongst the most sheltered there, and are the ones that came in mostly healthy lineups, and not when we needed them to play higher in the lineup due to injuries.

according to NST, last 3 years:

1. Muzzin-Rielly 57min, 68.9xgf%
2. Giordano-Rielly 66min, 60.0xgf%
3. Rielly-Bogosian 32min, 59.4xgf%
4. Rielly-Liljegren 335min, 55.3xgf%
5. Rielly-Boosh 287min, 54.5xgf%
6. Rielly-Brodie 1964min, 53.1xgf%
7. Rielly-Holl 293min, 53.0xgf%
8. Rielly-Sandin 112min, 52.8xgf%
9. Rielly-Benn 73min, 52.2xgf%
10. Rielly-Dermott 155min, 47.0xgf%
11. Rielly-Schenn 86min, 45.6xgf%
12. Rielly-Gustafsson 42min, 41.5xgf%

(Benn> Schenn ?)

Playoffs

1. Rielly-Brodie 114min, 67.9xgf%
2. Rielly-Holl 35min, 66.9xgf%
3. Rielly-Boosh 83min, 49.6xgf%
4. Rielly-Ceci 74min, 43.2xgf%

and again, the Boosh and Schenn pairings are amongst the softest usage pairings here.

TLDR; the problem with Mo is Mo
Hm don't think so, as Zeke showed. He requires more massaging than most d of his caliber but a decent coach would have figured it out by now I think. After all this time, to land on Boosh or Schenn as his optimal partner is kind of telling.

Yeah forgot about Benn. Not convinced Schenn is materially different. And both are a big step down from Lilly. Too bad Keefe is a neanderthal, apparently.

Yep, #7 defenders aren't ideal partners for anyone, nevermind an elite offensive play driver with defensive issues

Barrie is a form of retained salary tho for next year

Sure. But taking Barrie at $4.5M for one year is not equivalent to retaining a significant chunk of a $6.25M salary for four seasons.

Plus there’s the possibility they can shelter Barrie, let him pile up a bunch of PP points and then flip him at next year’s deadline with 50% of his cap hit retained for more assets.
