The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

Swing and a miss for the nerds on Seattle. Ouch. Many had them as one of the best teams in the NHL this year. I think a lot of them sucked off dudes who were sheltered on other teams.

Tldr: they made the same mistake of aggressively ignoring usage when evaluating players. Ol' zekie's (rightful) pet peeve!

yeah they are somehow getting no offence and awful goaltending. Baaaad combo.

Significant lack of star power hurts there. They had opportunities to fix that but chose not to and focussed on sexy nerd stats over star power.

The goaltending flop is a shock though. They suck regardless but that hurts the most probably.

Wasn't that based off of what was available at the draft and not what they actually ended up taking?

Did people actually think Seattle was going to be good? It was easy to look at that roster and see they were bad and that the drafting decisions they made were bad. Spent 5 min on capfriendlys expansion tool and created a better team

Yes. In fairness a lot of it was because of their d and goaltending. I think Micah had their d rated in the top 3. And goaltending maybe the best.

It was based on what they took. I'm pretty sure both Micah and Evolving Wild loved them. Not sure about Dom... Probably not him.

Thats grim then. I remember us shitting all over their selections at the end of the draft. Turrible

Yeah the hugest thing is goaltending. They were projecting to have elite elite goaltending....but they've had the worst goaltending in the league..by a lot.

That itself would have had them in playoffs contention if true. But that's no excuse - these guys need to do a better job at incorporating goaltending into their models. In fact, I have a hunch that ignoring goaltending entirely would actually make rankings at least as good if not better.

And when the goaltending is that bad, from multiple goalies, then we know that it's probably not all just goaltending. All the models said that Seattle would be a very good defensive team and while the defensive stats are solid it's hard to believe a legit good defense could let any goaltending look that bad.

It's unfortunate because I think all of them would admit that Seattle was inherently by far the riskiest projection, but they don't really try to build that into the projections.

A projection built on goaltending and the defensive numbers of depth players has to be adjusted somehow for variability imo.

If we are to move another draft pick make it for a guy that will help this year and a few more. That Foligno deal was pathetic then and even worse now.

We’re looking as good or better than we have ever before. No reason not to go all in.
