The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

The good news it that seems like a real clarifying year for a lot of teams that thought they were better than they were so this may be a buyer's market for legit quality players from teams that really want to blow it up.

And we have a bunch of good but not elite prospects that are imo movable.

Like the east playoffs are already set. That's 8 teams already in sell mode in one conference.

I think 11 teams are eliminated already:

CBJ
PHI
DET
NJD
NYI
CHI
BUF
SEA
OTT
MTL
ARZ

so we can start looking for trade assets there.

CBJ - Nada
PHI - Giroux
DET - Nada
NJD - Nada
NYI - Nada
CHI - Is DeHaan better than Holl (question for anyone other than Zeke)
BUF - Is Eakin worthwhile as a #4 C?
SEA - McCann, is there a 4C in there worth grabbing?...Gio looks like he might have something left.
OTT - Nada
MTL - Nada
ARZ - Don't laugh, but Lawson Crouse might be what Mimsy was supposed to be

I think it really comes down to what you think we need. I don't see any super obvious holes, but there's some places where an upgrade would be nice

#3/4C - Kampf has been surprisingly okay in super extreme defensive usage, but I wouldn't complain with a more complete guy pushing him down the lineup for the playoffs.
#2RD - That can just as easily be an internal upgrade, but Muzz-Holl isn't working this year. I'm cool with moving one of Sandin/Lilly up with Muzz, or moving either up with Rielly, and then Brodie down with Muzz, but that's a definite spot to look at. Gotta tinker hard now and find a solution before the deadline. Can't go into the playoffs just expecting to ride that pairing as a shutdown duo the way they've looked this year.
#2-3LW - I don't buy 2.4 P/60 Kerfoot, and Mikky looked fucking great last night but let's see it consistently (he also has a grand total of 0 NHL playoff points in 12 games now) before I buy him as a real middle 6 winger.

Shouldn't this (core) group at least win a single playoff round before we chuck another two high picks + out the window for an over 30 player?

the team hasn't really responded to most of these veteran type additions anyway.

Let the team earn the big over-the-top trade. If it can.

Giroux wouldn't be about adding a gritty veteran to show the kids the way though, we haven't actually added anything useful at the deadline to this group yet. Giroux would be adding another Tavares level player to the group for a potetnial playoff run.

Giroux would be an order of magnitude better than any other deadline addition we’ve made in recent team history, to be sure.

But it’d still feel insane to burn multiple first round picks once again on a guy that’d be here for a month or two of regular season games plus one playoff run, and then would be gone. And to make that gamble before this group’s won a single playoff round together, let alone demonstrated they’re capable of going on an extended run.

Agree with zeke that they have a lot of solid, but unspectacular prospects. And many of them can perhaps have more value than their true worth. I trust the Leafs in identifying which players those are. Amirov is a guy that strikes me as incredible currency (he still has that top 15 pick allure and he hasn't necessarily done much to prove he's a stud or a bust yet), but you've gotta get a stud in return if that's where you're heading.

yeah I didn't even mention the rental part. that too. Giroux hasn't produced well in the playoffs for a number of years now either. he piled up most of his career numbers 10+ years ago.

I don't get the sense in waiting until the team gets over the top before making a move to try and put them over the top.

Ice the best team you can heading into the playoffs. This team has a good chance to win it all. The first will maybe help the team in 2026.

they don’t really need anything. They should just go after the best player they can get. Giroux would be awesome
This is actually a good sign that it's worth spending futures for reinforcements. It means they're bulletproof and it's worth going heavy by making an elite team even better. Teams that give up futures to fill dire needs across their lineup are the ones that make mistakes. Hard to fix a major weakness in your lineup that suddenly makes you cup contenders with a single trade.

Of course, you've gotta go big game hunting.. And if you make a Muzzin-type trade for a guy with a little term, even better. Worth spending a little more if you can find the right fit for a guy with another year or 2.

Honestly, a Kessel deal where they pick up an elite skilled player with term and salary retention for like Amirov, Hirvonen and a 1st would be perfect.
