The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I have no idea who Shanahan will hire.

Let's pretend it is a veteran exec like Treliving or McPhee though

In that event, does this mean a big move less or more likely than if he were to hire Tulsky or even stick with Pridham?

I realize what the narrative is right now but you could debate either way as a new person coming in.

because although the focus is on the core as it absolutely should be, the reality is the rest of the team needs to be rebuilt regardless given the number of free agents. and you could make the argument that there could still be a turnaround in 25 year old Matthews and Marner's postseason performance with a mostly new roster around them AND a new coach/style of play that either a) complements them better or b) compensates for their weaknesses better.

the other argument is that you have a large enough postseason sample now that it's apparent you can't have this core mix anymore regardless of what you put around them. And that is also fair. Dubas changed half the squad at this past deadline, and they still got outplayed most of the playoffs. How many more times are you gonna run up to the Core 4/5 football??

I think there's a good chance at least one gets moved. Not just to change things, but to try and redistribute some cap to the defence which does not suit the game of Matthews and Marner whatsoever. Much more firepower is needed back there for a team that struggled to score more than a couple goals when things tighten up.

I do still think Matthews will re-sign...though I'm starting to suspect it might be another deal similar to the last one at an even higher cap hit....but that is the absolute 1st thing to get figured out. all roads and forks thereof happen after that decision is made, including what to do with Marner and the rest of them. If Matthews waffles and wants to stall, I think you have to blow it up. Allowing Auston Matthews to walk out the door at 26 as a UFA would be, unquestionably, the Leafiest thing to ever Leaf. And even I cannot believe that they would actually let that happen.

I apologize on behalf of everyone for discussing the most riveting press conference in Leafs history.
Fuck you apologizing for me and fuck him for making you feel this way you poor man.

Get a water tower up ME

Maybe Kyle didn't feel he was close to getting fired, wanted mo money, and felt that he was in the driver's seat and not the organization?

Why settle for extending at less money than he felt he was worth if he just played out the clock? Shit, it appears to have almost been the right play until he fumbled the bag on live TV.
Bingo
