The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

If shanny really did have his hands on things, I don't buy that it was exclusively a this year thing yeah. No chance.

Plenty plausible…..noise of strife between the two had only made it into the news this year tho.

Maybe we’ll find out later it goes further back….but it was known months ago there was issues.

Cool, he has permission from his team before anyone asks them for it.

Like prequalifying for a mortgage with the bank.

actually some team (not Leafs) asked permission to speak to him and Calgary refused....which was weird because his time is over there

Dubas getting Mirtle to write another article pimping may work with his supporters but no one else is going to buy this bullshit.

Let’s get real real here, how stupid, gullible or desperate to defend Dubas does someone have to be to believe

“Good move Dubas, bad move Shanny”

Also this isn’t going to do Dubas any favours trying to find a new gig.

Obviously it wasn't a win in losing geadreau for nothing and tkatchuk was a loss....but he got a decent return for a player that wasn't going to sign.

If someone can turn Marner into hellybuck and a powerforward with offense or a number 1 dman..then I take that deal. With the money saved you can pay Willy and auston.
We fire you too before you can make that deal, or hold any sad press conference.

I think the answer is more boring than this.

This is how nearly all organizations work, and the ones who don't work that way, started off that way until the top sports guy earned enough credibility to get (nearly complete, but never fully complete) autonomy.

Major decisions always involve the uppers.

I don't doubt that moves were blocked over the years, as happens in most organizations. But until we know what moves those were, it's kind of impossible to judge whether they were reasonable decisions. But in most organizations, big moves get cleared by upper upper management.

Full autonomy is pretty much a myth until you're Masai Ujiri
Ya, I mean what if Shanny blocked him from reacquiring Babushkin at the deadline?

I also don’t get why Dubas would want to come back if he couldn’t do anything. The reality is his fingerprints are all over this team and organization. Good and bad.

he has to own the record.

as does Shanny because he hired him.

I think his worst moves appear in hindsight to be him getting a lot of toys for his coach or moving out players his coach didn’t play, not the bigger ones that the Pres might have his hands in, IMO.

Honestly it’s a waste of time trying to peg certain moves on either of them….for all we know Shanny just pushed for some certain player types being part of the additions, and Dubas made his own mistakes from there.

All we know more definitively is that they were butting heads on something and the additions people don’t like, are the low hanging fruit to point to.

Yeah, I don't think Shanny ever popped into the office and said:

"hey Kyle, you remember that time I forced you to give Nick Ritchie a 2 year deal with too much of our precious cap space? Well yeah, he's been a flop I know, but I've been watching a lot of Coyotes games lately and they have this brutal Russian defenceman who chases hits all the time that we should trade him for.....make it happen or clean out your desk, nerd"

I think that’s what some have been doing already here though and that’s what I’m responding to.

I think if someone’s trying to say Shanny was pulling strings in bringing in plugs and Dubas couldn’t do what he wanted, you can’t ignore that his moves seemed to be exactly what his handpicked coach wanted so there seems to be more to it than that.

Just on the point of how quality organizations work….Dubas should have been extended for 2-3 years last offseason, so you never get to this point. And if things change, you axe him and eat the money.

As a major corporation though, you’re happy to have that insurance in hand, to avoid situations like we have now, where it looks like a cluster fuck.

Yeah “you have to trade sandin and Engvall”? Come on.

If anything he pushed for ROR and McCabe.

agreed, but we’re still just guessing…..the fact any notes were being pushed to the point of strife is the worthwhile topic imo,

rest is just speculative…even tho, I do agree with your speculations here.

Hard to picture Shanny saying “I really want Sam Lafferty on this team. Get him.”

Or “Don’t even try to trade for Ekholm.”

Or “Trade fucking Engvall and Sandin away for picks.”

But he does seem like a guy who would want to get in the way of Nylander or Marner getting traded for junk….
