The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Grab your ankles and prepare yourself.

The journalism in Toronto sports media is a hell of a hill to die on.

we only ever said Mirtle….you are the one needing to stretch it out to “toronto sports media”…to try and further cover your ass.

pre-emptively covering for how wrong you might be tho, is magnificently Trumpian.

No GM gets final cut. They all have bosses. Even Ken Holland would have to get Katz sign off to do anything major.

I highly doubt he could have agree to take on Ekholms $20 mill or whatever without authority from ownership. Very rare that a president would have that level of financial authority in an organization.

The funny thing is you don't even realize you're agreeing with us, and are yourself dismissing that "reporting" as bunk.

We all agree that Shanny obviously would have a voice at the table. The "reporting" suggested something much, much more than that.

I know exactly what I wrote. Dismissing Mirtle and 99% of his cohorts comes easy to me.

What I’ve said in the past was that Shanny had a voice and this roster wasn’t purely Dubas’ Directors Cut and you objected to that previously

Yes we know you don't want to believe that moves at "key stages of the season" that would have apparently certainly gotten them "deeper in the playoffs" are in fact significant moves.

if its good as it is….no need for you to keep changing it (every. single. time) to sound worse. lol

Only in Toronto is this news worthy.

…and even the follow up reporting from Friedman says Dubas didn’t ask for that in contract talks.

but something more streamlined so the process didn’t take so long to have ideas run up the flagpole, and get approval for.

I firmly believe that if Kyle felt he was "dictated" trades that he didn't want to make but was forced into, he wouldn't have gotten into a situation where as Friedman describes it "the deal was on the 2 yard line" before Kyle's media availability.

So I think mirtle's article was way overblown and this wasn't about a power dynamic - it was literally about Kyle and his family *like he told us*.

Not when they’re 30-something and have made the second round once.

He had a cush gig here and a big money offer for several more years, and I doubt he’s going to land anywhere where they just hand him the keys to the castle.

I never said Dubas lacked ego…

Now look at who is retreating to extremes.

Of course i would never have argued that dubas would be the only gm in the league that didn't answer to any of his bosses.

That doesn't make any sense to me tbh.

If you have a GM and a President and a Board, that's... how it always works, no?

Yep, you leapt to his defence over an article where he does the exact type of shit the rest of the Toronto sports media loves to do. Admitted that said portion was hacky but still want to use the rest as cover fire.

Mirtle is one of them. His salary is paid by clickbait bullshit as much as the rest of them.

Isn’t Friedman just rehashing the obvious with Matthews. He was always going to get a feel for the new GM and direction of the team if Dubas was fired before signing any extension . Connecting the dots here

except that’s the foundation the pro-Dubas argument is built on….they had a good collaborative relationship for years, including his first 3+ years as GM….and as reporting laid out earlier this year, and now again after the axing, they began to but heads much more in recent years.

which as CH accurately said, is to be expected when you get the string of outcomes we were having….especially if a Dubas deal was blocked at a key moment, or guys Dubas really didn’t want to add were pushed for to round out the roster.

But as Zeke has pointed out, Dubas' history of moves is pretty consistent over the course of the 5 years. There was no hard right turn into good pro territory as if an additional hand started to take the wheel.

I feel like convincing a moneybags owner would be easier than convincing a HOF, Stanley Cup champ who” played the game the right way”
