The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I'm guessing he thought he was in the clear until CJ asked him that very pointed "Do you want to be here and do you still have it in you?" question - that's when it sorta went south.

But the President has an obligation to make sure the GM he's extending is totally committed - it's reasonable for him to have been shaken by that "uh, um, i can't say, my family" answer.

I was sure he was coming back until then and then posted on Tuesday that based on his answers I was open to moving on - and I didn;t even know he had a contract offer in hand. Why wouldn't Shanahan walk away feeling that too?
if the first time you're hearing about some questions regarding an underlings commitment to a very difficult job is via a press conference on the eve of offering him a pile of life changing money, that will raise alarm bells. so tough to blame Shanny much here based on what we know.

yeah, this is a really good point. why the fuck did he insist on holding a press conference? especially if it was for him to publicly declare his uncertainty about proceeding.

to go further down Habsy's rabbit hole here, the only thing remotely logical I can come up with right now is that Mrs. Dubas demanded the press conference OR it was an attempt to placate her. obviously a lot of assumptions doing some work here.

and for further clarity, I hold no ill will or antipathy towards Mrs. Dubas no matter what facts ultimately emerge.

I think we can take Shanny's version (because it's flattering) that Dubas felt it was his responsibility to be there to answer for the season and he understood that... but I think it was a bad call if you know there's a chance you might get asked "do you want to be here?" and you're not ready to answer.

He nearly did get away with it though because if CJ never asks that question, who knows?

and as we reminded you when you "predicted" that, there was nothing different about the moves Dubas made this year than he did in any other year.

a refresher, Dubas adds:

Year 1: J.Tavares, J.Muzzin P.Lindholm, T.Ennis, F.Gauthier, T.Moore, N.Petan, I.Ozhiganov, M.Marincin, J.Holl, M.Hutchinson

Year 2: I.Mikhehev, A.Kerfoot, J.Spezza, P.Engvall, K.Clifford, N.Shore, D.Timashov, N.Robertson, C.Ceci, T.Barrie, K.Gravel, R.Sandin, J.Campbell, K.Kaskisuo

Year 3: T.Brodie, N.Foligno, J.Thornton, W.Simmonds, Z.Bogosian, A.Barabanov, A.Galchenyuk, R.Nash, T.Boyd, J.Vesey, A.Brooks, M.Lehtonen, T.Liljegren, D.Rittich

Year 4: D.Kampf, M.Giordano, N.Ritchie, O.Kase, M.Amadio, N.Abruzzese, I.Lyubushkin, K.Dahlstrom, P.Mrazek, E.Kallgren

Year 5: R.O'Reilly, C.Jarnkrok, N.Acciari, S.Lafferty, ZAR, NAK, P.Holmberg, D.Malgin, J.McCabe, L.Schenn, C.Timmins, J.Benn, M.Murray, S.Samsonov, J.Woll
But this year's deadline broke you

Personally, I still think publicly wondering whether you want to continue in a role and then coming back with a far bigger salary demands (and until disputed, that's what I'm going with) with very limited playoff success is just a huge risk to take and I have to think Kyle's smart enough to realize that's what it was.
Probably wanted more money than shanny and that was a no go.

Only a lurker, but I've always found it fitting it's the only board run by a mod that hates the team.
Mess doesn't hate the team, he just loves to fuck with the over the top homer kids who feel they need to get into a death match with anyone who dares not toe the company line and worship Dubas. The biggest problem with the board is the homer mods and the mods in general who hide behind a generic account to hand out infractions

If your a boss, with a job offer for your employee in hand, and the employee isn't 1000% on board, you move on.
For a job like this especially, yeah absolutely.

Plus, I'm not sure where the swagger went but I still would've expected Kyle to say "fuck yeah, i still have it in me and i know i'm still the one to lead us" to the second part of that question. What happened to that?

Quite a change from the “we can and we will” days, eh?

All he had to do was say.." I believe that this team can win a Stanley Cup, and I want to be the gm to get it done".

But, no.

I’m not really into this particular rabbit hole, tbh. It’s completely wild speculation to try and suss out Mrs. Dubas’s involvement in this, and what kind of father & husband Kyle is behind closed doors. And I’m not sure that anyone projecting their own life experience onto Dubas’s marriage is particularly useful.

There’s plenty to go on by just focusing on Kyle himself, who pretty clearly seemed to be out of ideas on how to move the team forward and burned out by the job.

He's doing that bit 24/7 though it seems. Nothing is genuine. I don't see the point.

I've no doubt she threatened to leave. None.
Somebody somewhere (maybe here?) made a great point about GMs not having any time off. The offseason for players does not apply for GMs. Cannot be easy on any family. Especially not a young family.
