The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

He's doing that bit 24/7 though it seems. Nothing is genuine. I don't see the point.
He's been posting there for 20 yrs and trying to have a decent discussion on that forum has become extremely difficult so i guess he may have just said fuck it and decided to screw with the kiddies.

Either that or he's just driving traffic just like Dekes for Days and a few other accounts.

Different financial terms. Is that what was actually said? Why wouldn't shanny say increased? Maybe it was different in terms of structure and opt outs or whatever. Or maybe it was 4 vs 6 million.

As for the wife. Nothing says a potential increase in salary had to do with his family life. Both can be true.

I still find it odd that Shanny did not fire him based on performance.

we don't know the specifics, but the rumour was they started at 4 per, and then the last minute counter was 6 per

I don't know your experiences in this and again this is meant with respect due but unless he's an emo snowflake it was something serious from the wife.

I've been up to my eyeballs in work stress, lawsuits etc and nothing affected me like my wife's threats. Nothing.

So maybe I'm drawing on personal experience and recency bias but I've done a heck of a lot of meditation and soul searching on this and I just don't believe it was because of a coup attempt gone badly. You wouldn't even mention your wife and family in that scenario, perhaps one as a parting statement, but not at the level he fell on his sword.

I've been in this situation where kids and money fuck up a lot in a relationship where one spouse is being ignored and I'll fully admit my fault in diving into work to build something for us and not balancing it properly.

I now try to warn workaholics of this.

Sure it's speculating but I've now watched both pressers three times and what I see is Shanahan thinking its all business because he does not know the severity of the cost on Kyle's marriage with everything and why would he know? Its not something you tell your boss, that you're distracted from your job.

Shanahan believed what he said, so did Dubas, what they didn't do was talk about the exact same thing. One was business, the other was both business and personal.

People rely on occams razor but the razor really says to start from the smallest amount of variables and go from there. I did that and the extraneous information given, especially by Kyle, leads me to believe there's more to it.
But if you watched then you’ll know Shanny said Dubie spoke with him about the family thing, he was aware of it before the Dubie presser and specifically acknowledged that it is hard on the family, it’s hard on the family of everyone, but it’s the nature of the job, in the “sport we choose.” So if Shanny already knew about it, regardless of how true or how serious it was, why would watching the presser have affected Shanny the way it did?

It is something that he told his boss, and then he went and told the whole world, at a presser his boss told him to put on hold for a bit. And at the presser, for the very first time ever, he said he wasn’t sure he wanted to stay as GM and might walk away to go sit on his porch and nap for a year or two. It was that statement that caused all this, and then apparently $2m more would make it all better.

If it was a family thing, they’d have dealt with it internally, or Dubie would’ve announced he was walking away. He wouldn’t insist on a presser before deciding, in order to let the world know he was having trouble at home, and then spring a big demand a few days later. Does that really align with guy having marriage difficulties or guy wanting to try to leverage public opinion to create a sense of ambivalence that needed more convincing to the tune of $2m?

Pretty sure he said he was aware that Kyle said he'd have to talk it over with them because it'd taken a toll on them, but that he was surprised as to the extent of it when he watched the presser.

Which makes sense because Kyle couldn't answer the "Do you want to be here?" question. That would be a surprise to someone who thinks he has a contract close to the finish line.

Somebody somewhere (maybe here?) made a great point about GMs not having any time off. The offseason for players does not apply for GMs. Cannot be easy on any family. Especially not a young family.
Coach's have it much more difficult since they travel with the team and GM's have plenty of time to spend with their families since it's not like they need to be at the arena 24/7.

Imo Dubas started to believe his own bullshit about being some sort of genius and developed a god complex where he believed he was above having his work critiqued. When he wasn't offered a contract is started to eat away at his entitled arrogant ass. The longer the season went on the more he turned into a pissy little bitch and i guess he took out on his wife who had enough of his shit.

Basically what i'm saying is it wasn't the market or the responsibilities of the GM position that put pressure on his wife but Dubas not being able to handle the pressure of not having everything go his way that created the issues.

I think it's a combination of him just breaking under the stress of the job in addition to the impact it had on his family.
He didn’t break. He started to change to something he wasn’t because what he was wasn’t working. And what he changed into was starting to become a shit GM with a lot of arrogance.

You make a bunch of dumb moves and then win one game in the second round and want to be doubling or tripling your salary after having this extension in your hands for months? Please don’t put any fucking blame on your wife. And if you want the job, fucking clearly say so when a reporter asks you live.

IMO after hearing everything. Shanny got as complacent as everyone else in the org as the results were good and everyone was comfortable.

But when Dubas said he may leave Shanny had to think about alternatives and he realized “oh yeah, do I want to extend him for this? Its not good enough." And then Dubas asked for more money and power.

And Nill is Canadian and lived in Michigan for so long. He'd come here. Just pay him ridiculous money.
Nill is worth pursuing and his contract is up next summer. Gotta think he'll resign though if the money is close, would have to be a substantial offer. I don't see Dallas giving him up in his final year. Might actually trigger an extension.

Who runs the Leafs for a year? Shanny? Pridham?

Plot Twist: CJ is Littlefinger who plotted the perfect question to make Dubas unravel, and is now secretly trying to get a GM interview for himself.

Yeah, its deciding the types of players to focus on in the rankings too. The scouts will develop the list in accordance with the skill sets the GM values.

Nills done this for 30 years with two different orgs, and I'm sure many different scouts.
And if Dallas wins the cup, maybe it’s time for a new challenge.

Shanny definitely seemed to have someone in mind when he said he started on the process of other GMs after the Dubie presser…

No matter how you slice it, Shanahan doesn’t come out of this looking good.

It shouldn’t have taken a press conference and a last minute change of heart for him to start seriously considering moving on from Dubas.

Coach would be the worst.

Mess doesn't hate the team, he just loves to fuck with the over the top homer kids who feel they need to get into a death match with anyone who dares not toe the company line and worship Dubas. The biggest problem with the board is the homer mods and the mods in general who hide behind a generic account to hand out infractions
Place must be littered with water towers

I find it noteworthy that the statement was signed "The Dubas Family". Lends credence to the Habsy theory (which I support).

"Reasonable and consistent but private". Very interesting choice of words. But yeah, sounds like Shanny's version is largely accurate.

Now the two key missing pieces of info we may never know are: 1) why the sudden press conference about face; and 2) what were the 'additional' demands that skewered the entire negotiation...

and, in case there's any doubt, for the many folks who have said that Dubie's presser gave Shanny the impetus to can him, no disagreements here either. if the guy cannot say he's all in right before signing a massive new extension, and you're surprised to hear this, and you hear it via the press, makes total sense to force you to reconsider whether this is the guy you want running the ship.
The Dubas Family aspect of it makes him a total poser. A clown and a douche using the family card for sympathy. The Dubas Family was not the GM of the Leafs, so here he is pushing his family to the forefront again when there’s no reason for them to be there.

He should have done that before offering a deal.
