The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

To be fair, Burke did add the qualifier that his comments were about his dealings with a different CEO (Richard Peddie) and a different board.

In his interview, the only thing he had to say about dealing with the board after the switch to a new CEO and the current ownership group is “things got more complicated.”

…id totally forgotten it was Peddie. God I hated him.

Does Burke's description of his experience with the board give you pause at all that there might be some information we're missing here?

How'd we get from "I meet with the board once a year and they give me some thoughts" to a 3 day process to get individual deadline deals through?
I would say that the board has been much more active recently on other MLSE teams, not sure if that extends to the leafs but much of the involvement is based on revenue misses vs projection... lots of revenue is tied to playoff tickets/merch etc. Although less so for the Leafs.

Although “guessing” about Treliving, including Mirtle who said he had heard rumblings of his name being tied to use during the season…..seem to have been onto something, since he was our first interview?

Reporters learning about what happened after the fact, be it a trade, a dismissal, etc is often some of the most accurate reporting they do. It’s much different than trying to get information on what a team wants to do….as we clearly like to keep that as hush hush as possible, until it’s done. So you’re relying on agents or leaks from the other side in those instances.

Fried also reported the day after the firing, about the “streamlining” request….so imo the idea theyre completely clueless is silly. You just have to use your nogging a bit to separate the opinions from the reporting.

….and in fairness to them, I’m sure they’d love to just report and not have to speculate/share opinions, but when youre on TV nonstop, doing multiple radio hits daily, have to feed twitter to maintain engagement etc.….you’re obviously in a situation where you have to make the most content out of the information you do have….as well as fill segments with just opinion, and speculation you get from other GMs/agents. That’s all par for the course.

….and again it’s where using strong media literacy comes in. All these discussions just come down to that.
mirtle reporting of “rumblings” is illogical though given that they were prepared to extend dubas after treliving had already been let go by Calgary (not to mention treliving being employed by Calgary during the season).

that just reeks of BS.

Definitely the man most single-handedly responsible for our 10+ year run of no playoffs and horrible hockey.

Really, every sports team that guy touched turned to absolute shit under his watch.

yeah the only thing that actually changed materially between Shanny being willing to offer an extension and then firing Dubie was the presser where Dubie questioned his own motivations publicly

Think you guys are far too binary on your thinking….they also hadn’t extended Dubas the offseason prior and were letting his contract run out. And Shanny pivoted to being okay letting him go awfully quickly, so clearly he wasn’t overly enamoured with bringing him back.

To me it’s illogical to think the reporting “reeks of bs” when (a) we do let Dubas going, and (b) the first guy interviewed is the one Mirtle heard rumblings about and everyone else speculated would be a top candidate.

To me that just reeks of not liking the reality of what was reported.,

He never questioned his own motivations…..he said it’s unfair to publicly answer where I’m at, prior to speaking to my family. (who recently let him know just how taxing the past year had been on them.)

The idea Shanny loved him, and the presser is what changed his mind and got Dubas canned, still blows my mind.

Maybe dont verbally agree to an extension two months prior if the family concerns were that bad

No extension was agreed to…they discussed framework, and Shanny said he felt it was close, but who knows what Dubas felt.

…he also said in his presser he’d just learned the extent of the toll it has taken on them. 🤷‍♂️

maybe it’s all a lie, and it was all negotiation tactics from the diabolical Dubas who had the Pitt job lined up, and was walking regardless if they didn’t match the Pens offer. Not impossible.

Can’t post this ^ and not also post this too, IMO:

Burke had the same takeaway from that presser. He spoke highly of Dubas but says the math has to change for a President at that point.

I believe Kyle. Doesn’t really change much for me.

He got cold feet too late in the game.

I’m perfectly fine if that presser really moved the needle for you guys on wanting to ditch Dubas……I just couldn’t disagree more.

It’s a damn shame Chris Johnson asked what he did, that got Dubas fired….had he just not asked those specific questions, Kyle would still be our GM today, apparently.

That’s wild to think about.

to me this just repeats the other for the most part.

Burker, Shanny et all just sound like old timers who don’t live in 2023, when it comes to compassion for ones family life being a priority too.

Kinda sounds like a unfair thing to say about Burke tbh. Can't say I liked the philosophy here as GM by the end but sure seems like a dude who'd go through a brick wall for his family.

I don't think it's about lack of compassion at the end of the day. I think the President has an obligation to make sure the guy he's hiring wants to be here and that presser + increased demands painted the picture he didn't. It doesn't matter how morally upstanding his reasons were.

Friendman reported the very next day after Dubas was fired that what he asked for in his counter offer, was a “streamlining” of the process. Not to push Shanny out, or skip him, but to streamline the process so it was faster.

…and the “reporting” if we buy it from this Jonas 2 fella, is that Shanny was less involved with day to day hockey operations this season, so part of the delay in getting approval was Dubas getting a deal close, having to spend time bringing Shanny up to speed on every aspect of the deal, so that he could then take it to the board and sell it to them.

I know everyone wants to just dismiss virtually everything out of hand…but if that was the case, it fits with Dubas wanting to speed up the process, it costing us a big name D, and honestly prob played a role in why Shanny changed his mind so easily if it questioned his part in it at all.

…or its all lies from Dubas‘ buddies just to protect him…and everyone’s theories here that contradict any reporting, is the real truth.

This is the problem with rumours - one unsourced rumour can bounce around getting repeated by a bunch of people back to each other and then suddenly its all "how can you pretend there's no fire with all that smoke???".

BTW, Mike Futa's begging for an interview and Kypreos show pushing him as a candidate because they can get him on the show a lot (If he became GM) due to their relationship with him is annoying.

On the new GM rumblings I want to embrass the FI philosophy of not believing any reporting because i don’t like it…..pretty weird that Frank & Fried both have mentioned Treliving, Bergeron, Chiarelli, and Botterill….and a possible interview already having taken place, that they know nothing else about?

praying they’re all clueless as you lads say, and Tulsky is the call.

Its not weird. Its expected that they would repeat each other's speculation when they have no info. Thats what they do.

And every single one of the reporters that has mentioned those names has bent over backwards to avoid actually stating that they know those names are in play - every single reference contains a "might" or "maybe" of some sort.

So this actually goes back on you, not us - why would every single one of them avoid stating that the KNOW any of those names are definitely in play? There's only one answer to that.
