The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

The language used in the "reporting" pretty clearly delineates things the reporter believes as fact (though still may be inaccurate on) and pure rumour.

I'm pretty comfy with my assessment of their performance to this point. Their salaries are based on clicks generated and ads sold. Can't do that if you've got nothing to say. So if you genuinely don't have anything new to add to the conversation but you still want to make your boat payment...what now? Well, we all know what happens at that point. We've seen it for decades.
Hence, had conversations about and think there is internal debate on.

Yeah, that was weird but Shanny did hesitate at that point and didn’t give a glowing review. He said something like, umm I think he did a good job at the deadline. I’m guessing he liked the ROR and McCabe additions but was iffy about the rest, but a couple of days didn’t undo things in his mind yet, but it was only because he got too comfortable with Dubie.

That was the big takeaway of his presser for me. He said when he heard Dubie express doubt over returning, that was basically the first time in earnest that he thought about the Leafs being run by someone else. And he liked it.
its also one thing to bury the guy for how he handled his presser about his family, and the contract shit. To openly shit on the deadline moves, when some of those players are still under contract and it kind of reflects on Shanahan himself at least a little bit is a whole other matter

I mean even if they were saying they did actually know things, we would STILL be right to be skeptical of them and would still judge their claims on their previous track records.

but these rumours aren't even that. they're much much less.

Nill is a hail mary you probably have to throw. He isn't perfect. He has made loads of glaring, catastrophic errors. But you won't find any candidate with experience that didn't. And a newbie will make those errors too.

OR they were waiting for Dallas to be kicked out to see if they can get permission to speak with Nill. Probably a longshot but worth exploring.
Shanny indicated he already started on the process after the Dubie presser and before firing him. There’s at least one person out there that he has his eye on who hasn’t been reported on because these other names came in a wave after. I’m confident none of those guys has a shot, not even Treliving.

Nill is probably the top choice, but it's unclear how this would work. If I understand correctly, he's still under contract for next year. It's like a team asking to interview Dubas last offseason ... what would the Leafs have said other than go fuck yourself?

Whether or not to keep Dubas is a tough question for me to answer, and I expect it was an extremely tough decision for Shanny too.

definitely not something that he was sure of either way.

Definitely a Hail Mary. But worth exploring. Worst they can do is say fuck off.

well Lou had to resign from NJ to come to us.

the idea here I think is that Nill has a good enough relationship with the Stars, and has likely successors already groomed, that they wouldn't stop him.

but who knows.

That’s the thing. There’s no perfect GM out there. They’ll all have bonehead trades and bad picks in their record.

You gotta pick a guy based on his philosophy, not based on all his past moves (unless they contradict his stated philosophy).

You believe in letting kids play, not relying on old school plug vets, you’ll lean on the superstars, add skill and speed and grit where you can find it with those first two, and not try to shake up the core just to see what happens? That’s the guy I want, and if he made some shit trade in the past, I’m sure he’s acutely aware of it and isn’t trying to repeat it.

He will never trade key assets for a Kris Russell rental again.

I hope.

Coliacovo was likely used a a mouth piece to get Nill's name in the news as a person of interest. Plant the seed then approach Dallas.

It gets his attention ahead of time without tampering

Nill has done an excellent job of drafting without super high picks, save for Miro, which he nailed, and getting alot out of young dudes on his roster.

A big part of the end for him was in how he handled himself. I think Shanny lost respect for him with his agent and presser bullshit. If you come off like an idiot in that process, then maybe you’re actually an idiot and not taking the team anywhere, as evidenced by the playoff record.
