The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Im with Prestron on Treliving, i think lumping him in with the Chia and Bergy's is very unfair, and he did some good things in Calgary (along with very bad, namely bridging american stars in fucking calgary) but you could do a lot worse IMO

that said it does reek as a little, i dunno lazy?

that said, now that i endorse it, Preston assuredly hates it.

I'm not going round and round about the Dubas stuff anymore. I've said my piece and it's nothing to do with me lacking compassion for a family situation.

I'm probably more fine with Treliving than anyone else here so I'm calm! I like a guy that values nerdies, led a team with great nerdies for a long time, and learned valuable lessons along the way!

He wouldn't be my first choice but they could do so much worse.
It's a little uninspiring but yeah, Treliving is better than Chiarelli, IMO.

Would hope Shanny's not simply picking from the small pool of names tossed about though.

I always thought his Calgary teams were overrated as hell, like these Leafs he had regular season success paired with zero postseason results (even in a weak Western conference), the list of contracts he’s handed out is horrific and the way he handled the Tkachuk & Gaudreau situations (up to and including the Tkachuk trade) was godawful.

So I definitely would not be “fine” if he’s the guy we hire.

not binary, and my mistake if I phrased it that way…..just different levels of compassion, which is perfectly fine….. I think you’re in same boat as many others, that feel that Shanny was justified in being so alarmed by Dubas’ family comments & misty eyes, as to change directions.

whereas for me it didnt move the needle one iota, other than to have even more respect for Dubas in respecting his wife so much, he wouldn’t say what the media wanted to say until they’d had the discussion with her.

that said, I don’t think Dubas nor his wife, ever would have dreamed their discussion or Dubas’ demonstration of emotion/respect for the family would (purportedly) result in his ouster.

thanks again CJ. 😒

if his name wasn’t already tied to us….0.0% of folks here would bring him up organically as someone we should be after, imo.

Can only take him at his word…..and he said in the presser, that he’s just learned in recent days the extent of the stress it had placed on them. (Her).

sucks for her, if him trying to show respect for her in his presser is what played such a huge role in gettting him canned…
The presser itself was unnecessary and evidently ill-advised.

The more analytics-driven people here probably would. His teams consistently had great nerdies. When he arrived to Calgary they were a tire fire.

Again, he may not even be in my top 3 but I don't really see him as much of a downgrade on Dubas. Both guys that led teams with great nerdies.. Nowhere tbh.

nah, I’m characterizing it accurately…..people are worked up that he showed emotion discussing his family stuff, and wouldn’t commit without speaking to them. (and its then been twisted into “he’s not committed to the team” or “he refused to commit to us” which is far more of a bastardization of what he communicated, imo.
Again, disagree with this characterization.

He made an unexpected public statement that evidently contradicted what he had been communicating privately.

There’s no issue with him showing emotion. The issue is in those emotions being brand new to the bosses and in fact catching them off guard based on what had transpired up to that point.

He could have questioned his future with the club completely passively, with an unreadable poker face and it would have brought about the same reaction from Shanahan...

....wait...what? You're not sure if you want to do this going forward?

The emotion in his voice wasn't the issue, the content of his message was the issue.

And to elaborate on this.. This glorifying of Kyle has been a bit much. Here is a good thread on his trades as Leafs GM. I don't agree with all of the results in these polls so ignore that, but this is hardly the work of some elite, untouchable GM:

He was good, not great.

…he had spoken to Shanny about the family issues prior to the presser, and Shanny says he advised him not to do the presser. So I’m not sure how blind sided he could have been.

…other than doing what others have done, and transform “need to speak to the family” into….“not sure Im interested in returning”….which was never said.

...wait...what? You're not sure if you want to do this going forward?

again, he never said this….he said he wasn’t comfortable answering without speaking to the family.

any extrapolation that he “didn’t want” to do this going forward, is applied by the viewer as opposed to being said in the presser. All he said multiple times in the presser, was variations of he couldn’t commit to answering anything until he spoke with the family…
