The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I dunno, I honestly don't even put it at a 1% chance. I think he was so transparent.

He lagged on extending because he was expecting the Leafs to advance far this year and give him leverage. That didn't happen, so he insisted on doing the presser, where he showed ambivalence for the job and threw the family thing out there, and thinking Shanny would've been rattled by the thought of losing him, would cave to the upcoming demand for bigger dollars and maybe even the rumored autonomy stuff.

He came off as a complete moron, pissed off Shanny for taking advantage of all the time and space he gave him, and negated all of the family crap with the greedy demand. He did this all publicly.

So, for your theory to be correct here, Dubie would have deliberately wanted to air dirty laundry to the world, get himself fired from what most would consider the top GM job in the league where he'd been comfortable for years and had hired pretty much everyone around him, go back on his public statement that he won't show up somewhere else next week (why would he do that if he was hoping to get out and go to Pittsburgh??), all to uproot his family and go to Pittsburgh where he's locked into the old stars' contracts that he won't be able to trade, and I would wager for substantially less salary?
Think it of from this angle, would you try to go for more money and autonomy without a backup plan? Would you Fred Flintstone something like this?

He didn't deliberately air laundry, he was all over the map because now he has to scramble into his backup plan. I would think as you do if it wasn't for the constant PR releases with something about wow we were lucky. With everything going on in the world you can't believe that Pittsburgh had the plan and Kyle knew "you know, should anything happen, call us". Don't assume this was all Kyle, he pulled a Greg in front of congress (succession) basically.

Dubas is the most devious man alive but also not that smart...should be great fodder for the Canadian reboot of Succession
It's kind of how like Jay Leno was touted as the nicest man in show business, then was revealed as the biggest POS.
People sometimes hide who they are. Bill Cosby was "America's Dad".

Habsys theory is the plot twist that happens when the writers run out of ideas and move the show into a ridiculous direction where it has officially jumped the shark. I can't get there. Sorry.

wait until Joel Osteen announces a 10% stake in the Penguins... then it will all make sense

Every single time it happens people are like, "I can't believe it" and I'm thinking are you fing kidding me?

to me this just makes it so obvious he was sure he was coming back to Toronto….or never dreamed they’d be the ones pulling the plug.
That's not my point though. Honestly, you don't think there's enough there to investigate?

well we knew about Jay hiding in closets to listen to execs, prior to getting the Tonight Show gig…..to quote Dave “he was always a bit of a brat.”

Yeah, I can't either. I think the simplest explanation is that no one is completely full of shit and that Kyle simply thought his bargaining position was stronger than it turned out to be. His "you're not going to see me somewhere else next week" was an emotional throwaway statement in the middle of a sincere discussion about how difficult the year honestly was on his family (for whatever reasons) that in light of getting fired (which I'm going to suggest was an outcome he didn't at all expect, knowing as he did that Shanny and the board wanted him back), he's now willing to walk back because multi million dollar paycheques aren't normal.

Basically, he was sincere in what he said and simply overplayed his hand.

that they made him an offer that week?….totally plausible, particularly with the purported jump in $$…(although I don’t think we have well reported numbers on that?)
