The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Paying a goalie real money is and will always be a handicap. If you're gonna do it, at least make it one of the few elite ones. But it's still gonna hold you back in optimizing your roster.

I'm fine with Helle but not that horny about it really. It better be cheap and it better not come with a long-term commitment at serious $$$.

Sorry it was $6.17 for Hellebuyck.

Obviously spending $7.0m on Helle+Woll this year would be massively better than spending $6.5 on Murray+Sammy last year, or $5.5 on Mrazek+Campbell the year before.

Dubas never really understood how to actually go cheap in net. He just went shitty.

I have to agree with the assessment of building a cup-winning d-core and winning with a cheap goalie.

yeah we probably still need a real Muzzin replacement most of all. a two-way physical big minute top pair guy. Him missing was probably the one reason we looked worse in the playoffs this year than we did last year.

I do think Lilly can get there but that's no sure thing.

I sure wish we had trade bait like Sandin to help trade for that kind of player, though.

A slow, faded hulk on D was not what we needed against speedy and skilled TB and Florida. This is just lazy recitation of age old "established" needs on a hockey team. Give me the more mobile, better puckmoving, high IQ dman over the dumb ox.

Last thing we should be doing is "replacing" Muzzin. We should be looking for guys like the new and improved Montour, or high end offensive guys like Karlsson. We can get a Schenn to provide what Muzzin brings for $800k.

And Sandin is the exact guy we should've kept and played, not deal away to get another big lug.

You really embarassed yourself with your Muzzin takes.

to nobody's surprise, the top pair that dominated last year's top matchups against Tampa was badly, badly missed this year, with his replacement floundering.

even while Rielly was busy being the best puck moving offensive dman in the playoffs.

I'm on the fence.

What we learned in these finals is, yet again, goalies are assholes. Are we not paying any attention? Bob lucked his way through three rounds until he fell apart, and in embarrassing fashion yesterday to close it out.

Hill is a pure nobody - the most games he's started in a season is 25, which he accomplished this year. Never played a playoff game until this season. And he just beat Bob handily.

I like the idea of having an "elite" goalie, but it means nothing honestly. As long as the goalie is good enough, it's the other players that win or lose the games. A spectacular goalie is only so for limited spurts, and rarely for a full postseason. And every goalie turns into a pumpkin for stretches. So do you commit $7M to a guy, or give Bob $10M like they did to show up one season so far and only play great for like 2.5 rounds? Or do you use that money on a really good offensive D or a top line winger who can score?

Still lean towards the skater, even if I'm deciding between that and an elite G (who will stop being elite out of nowhere, without notice).
