The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

it's not hate...just math

you're telling me that Auston will settle for a 6% raise (in total) from his 2020 salary all the way to 2030?

alrighty then....

Eh, does that matter much? He's at 11.6 now. His contract must be based on his comparables now rather than his contract signed before COVID.

his agent's job is to set a new bar
Tree's job is not to waste money on Matt Murrays of the world

The Leafs can't afford to be giving these guys big raises on their current cap hits. It doesn't fit with the rest of the NHL in 2023.
Set the bar, but not for 5 year deals.

Matthews can get whatever he wants. But why does everyone assume he wants the most he can possibly get when every other players signs reasonable 8 year deals. Pastrnak and MacKinnon could have got more. Its just a Toronto thing.
This is where it bothers me. Leaf players get treated better than anywhere, and yet the shit markets can get discounts. This can't continue if we want a cup.
I actually think Willy might be traded this summer if he asks for too much on an extension.
Things have changed. They signed their deals right before COVID.

Fully agree… we can’t compete with teams who have their star players on reasonable deals
It’s why our bottom 6 blows, we have nothing to spend on the bottom 6 because our top guys insist on breaking contract records

I get why this occurred, Leafs had awful luck with the timing of the deals and COVID. But in no way can they happen again in 2023.
Quite frankly, they need to show they want a cup with the deals. No big discounts required, just deals like other stars.
These players have been given everything.

his agent's job is to make Matthews happy, and i'm guessing Matthews would like to win some cups.

especially given that Matthews and his agent know full well, based on the very same metrics that got him the $11.6 deal, that due to unforseen events Matthews has ended up being well overpaid over this deal compared to what they thought the cap would be. i'm not sure matthews enjoys being the league wide example for taking the most money possible - he would have much preferred that the cap had gone up as they expected it to, making his salary look much more reasonable.

In fairness Matthews was the one guy that Dubas didn't even try to negotiate with on his first contract so I'm not sure that would be an indicator one way or another on whether Auston is likely to dig in or not with Tree here. We don't know what he's thinking or what his priorities are so it's all speculation at this stage. We can hope he chooses 8 years at a reasonable AAV and there are some priors throughout the league that prove that it's a possibility. But of course it's all up to him. And it's his right to choose what he wants.

I don’t see how the Leafs can justify giving Matthews 10% more than any other player in the NHL, and getting less term. The market has already been set.

If the cap had continued its expected trajectory the contract - signed before he turned into a 60gl Hart Center - would have looked more than fine.

The funny thing is it doesn't really matter all that much if its 12.5 or 13.5 or 14.5. Won't make much difference to the team's cap sutuation.
