The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

TLDR: this is a strong financial case to what zeke is arguing here. The "small raise" thing is definitely misleading considering what happened after last contract. Matthews may not give a fuck. Or maybe he will. We don't know what he's thinking either. We are all aware he has all of the leverage but if he's like other stars around the league, maybe he won't fight too hard and simply accept the tens of millions of dollars that the Leafs offer without demanding some ludicrous amount.

And locking in 8 years may not be the worst financial decision if he has any concerns about the longevity of his chronically injured wrist. The guys biggest weapon this year was severely hampered. He was still an incredibly elite player but not quite the scorer he once was without that shot. Does it ever return?

ch1 is very, very upset by this news of Matthews re-upping for 8 years.

au contraire...I am consistently pro player so I want the best for Matthews. I don't think Matthews getting a decent raise is ludicrous. Especially when some of his teammates are overpaid.

I was going to say that if AM signs for less, it might suck in one regard, but silver lining is that he's not too worried about his wrist compromising his career.

For sure. Just saying that there is a case for Auston to prefer 8 years even if you ignore the "I want to not suck this team dry and prefer to win" bit as other star players seem to follow at times.

This idea to lock-in for 'only" 3 because the cap will be much higher then makes the massive assumption he will still have the same negotiating power at nearly 30.
The smart play is 8 years now.

Agreed. Because he got 5 years, 11.6 per it means he WILL get a very small raise compared to others. It's meaningless. COVID changed everything.

what's meaningless is this looking backwards BS....if you don't share Auston's agent's unbridled optimism looking forward, some other franchise will

franchise values are skyrocketing...despite covid and whatever sad stat you have

We should probably keep in mind that Treliving is the same guy that just signed Jonathan Huberdeau for a max-term, $10.5M deal. So expecting him to drive a hard bargain with Matthews seems optimistic.

Likewise, from making bank in Switzerland in his draft year instead of making pennies in the NCAA or CHL, to signing for absolute top dollar while not committing for max term like his contemporaries, Matthews has always looked to squeeze maximum dollars from his playing career. So expecting that to change now also seems optimistic.

We are only suggesting that he is paid market value. Not ABOVE market value. That is all.

market is always in flux..you know that very well....and guys like Matthews (superstar, 25) are the ones that change it

you might be right and Matthews decides to meekly get in line..who knows?

Hey I'm only suggesting that possibility of it. I agree that Matthews is more likely to be a bit more cut throat.

As for the Huberdeau contract, welcome to the Calgary tax. They were never keeping him without giving him whatever he wanted to stay in Berta.

I really don't understand the significance of an extra 1.5 million four years from now when the Cap is 95-100M

cut back on your kerfoot addictions
