The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

In fairness Matthews was the one guy that Dubas didn't even try to negotiate with on his first contract so I'm not sure that would be an indicator one way or another on whether Auston is likely to dig in or not with Tree here. We don't know what he's thinking or what his priorities are so it's all speculation at this stage. We can hope he chooses 8 years at a reasonable AAV and there are some priors throughout the league that prove that it's a possibility. But of course it's all up to him. And it's his right to choose what he wants.
If that’s the case, he’ll be conditioned to expect the Leafs to accept any number he throws at them, and get pissed if they don’t.

These guys need to grow up. Either you want to squeeze them for every dollar you can get, or you acknowledge you’ve made a shit ton and will continue to make a shit ton and take a reasonable deal so that there’s money to go around to help win. That’s all there is to it. If you’re dying to make $14m now, you’re a fucking dickhead who doesn’t really want a cup.

If the cap had continued its expected trajectory the contract - signed before he turned into a 60gl Hart Center - would have looked more than fine.

The funny thing is it doesn't really matter all that much if its 12.5 or 13.5 or 14.5. Won't make much difference to the team's cap sutuation.
Oh, but you have to trade Tavares to free up that same $2m or $3m. I guess it was to cover the raise to Matty.

his agent's job is to make Matthews happy, and i'm guessing Matthews would like to win some cups.

especially given that Matthews and his agent know full well, based on the very same metrics that got him the $11.6 deal, that due to unforseen events Matthews has ended up being well overpaid over this deal compared to what they thought the cap would be. i'm not sure matthews enjoys being the league wide example for taking the most money possible - he would have much preferred that the cap had gone up as they expected it to, making his salary look much more reasonable.

I would argue that you can still win Cups paying Matthews 13.75-14.5.
Why should Matthews compromise so Leafs can light millions on fire for guys like Murray?

There's an extra 5 years of devolving into a ppg type player in the playoffs and only winning one round, since he signed his last deal. Hard to ask for much of a raise.

so now "noisy" playoff stats matter?

I hope, for your sake, Tree doesn't purse your playoff line of argument...not very endearing

"Hey Auston we'll pay you whatever you want but notice how every team we lose to and every team that wins cups pays less to their best players to outplay you in the playoffs? And how everyone that gets paid like you doesnt win? So yeah you tell us what you want to do. It's up to you."

"P.s. you didnt even finish top 20 in league scoring this year."

Giving Matthews 14.5 also has the trickle down effect of adding a couple million per to Marner’s next deal.

If they can both be paid as among the best players in the league, instead of 10-15% more than everyone else, that’s probably and extra $4-5M of cap space each year.

Auston is incredibly talented but lacks that psycho, win at all cost gene that someone like Michael Jordan possesses...

so, your argument may not sway him as much as you think....besides, Leafs have not stunk in the playoffs because Matthews has been overpaid. Lesser players on the team haven't earned their salary.

Ugh, it’s hard to just assume the GM was responsible for the shitty personnel decisions in games like the long-standing fuckery with Lilly, but then again, the idiot did trade away Sandin for nothing.

Keefe was a terrific coach that definitely lost his way by the end. Could that have been partially Dubas pushing for more low event shit from his depth? Wishful thinking probably, but I hope. But the way this team transformed after he replaced Babcock with progressive offensive zone strategies and free flowing hockey was a blast to watch. He has to get back to that. They went from gudpro garbage to globetrottering within a fucking week.

But by the end of Keefe's stint they went back to gudpro trash. He knows better. But the personnel given to him by Dubas didn't necessarily help either.

When Matthews signed his $11.6m deal to start in the 19-20 season, the cap for that 19-20 season had already been projected at $83.0m by the league, even though it ended up being only $81.5. The cap was supposed to be higher in year 1 of his deal than it is now going to be here in year 5 of his deal next year.

That $83m would have been a 4.4% increase over the 18-19 cap of $79.5m, which itself was a 6.0% increase over the 17-18 cap of $75.0m. It would have been a 5yr average of 4.0% increases, and a 10yr average of of 4.6% increases.

At 4% per year you would have projected the cap to be $96m 4 years later in year 5 of his deal, at 4.5% per year you would have projected it at $98m.

thanks for the math lesson, assistant to Mr Treliving. Let's see what numbers you have for me next summer.
