The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

There was a very good discussion earlier -- maybe Dubas cared too much about the long term balance sheet (ie McCabe, held on to the 1st rounder) instead of going all in....but I keep coming back to "if Carter Verhaeghe impacts the series more than Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner combined, we're kind of fucked...what's our advantage at that point?"

And obviously Kyle and Keefe are on the same page, and we know what the latter wants.

do we know this though, if…

Both Cam Charron and Jack Han (who used to work with the Leafs and are now twitterers) have said the Leafs coaching staff never listened to their ideas. So I'm guessing Keefe doesn't give a shit about doctors and sports scientists any more than he does video coaches and nerds.

…like I get the argument that if he wasn’t he should have fired him, but we were coming off our best season yet last offseason, and were a 111pt pace team under him.

still could make the argument, just saying it plausible they didn’t see eye to eye, but the on ice play didn’t justify sacking him yet. dunno, 🤷‍♂️

maybe it’s both their faults Charron/Han’s ideas didn’t get implemented (also possible some of their ideas fucking sucked)….but yeah if they were both flat out ignoring
data driven ideas/improvements. We’d more than justified in axing them.

I'm sure they have disagreements on things, but Keefe is the only coach Kyle has hired, and he did it 3 times every time he was promoted.

They are on the same page. Keefe is literally Kyles ideal coach.

youre absolutely right….if what I speculated had been the case, it would have shown itself much earlier.

Yeah, it probably wouldn't have mattered but it may have gotten them past Florida. Throughout most cup runs stars do take off a series or sometimes 2. If that extra "superstar" jolt could carry them in a round where the big boys up front weren't having it, then maybe everything changes and Auston/Mitch get back on track the rest of the way. Regardless, they weren't good enough to win it I think.

But it's hard to know for sure. And keeping a clean balance sheet is very important too. There's a balance and it's tough to know what the sweet spot truly is. But Kyle is certainly more Shatkins than AA, whatever one things of either management style.

third in the entire playoffs with 6.5 xG…behind only McDavid (6.7) and Leon (7.6).
Is still a great winger. But as a center, it sure isn't ideal that they have to aggressively shelter an 11m dollar man. He was basically just keeping his head above water getting tertiary cushy matchups all playoffs. He should have dominated.

I agree that keeping a clean balance sheet is vital, but one of those reasons is that keeping it clean allows you to occasionally go all in.

Dubas is a draft guru, he seems to able to find late first rounders in the 2nd round...so not sure how important keeping Boston's first was this year....as an outsider, I felt this year was a more all-in year than most.

would be hilarious if Shanny was the one true nerd all along. not what I would have predicted, but will chuckle if that's how it turns out.

Thats my prediction tbh. Got run out of head office for being too forward thinking, came here and hired a 29 yr old who revamped his junior team using hand built data sets, and then ran the most legendary old school GM in the league out of town to promote the nerdy kid.

Nerdy kid turned out to not be much of a nerd, and shanny told him "fine, just win".

his on-ice expected goal differential was +6.7….🤷‍♂️

Just not the guy I think we need to get rid of.

You're including PP. He was basically break-even at evens. In cushy usage with elite linemates. It wasn't good enough. The whole point of having an 11m dollar man on the 2nd line was so that he'd feast on the easier usage.. But he couldn't even do that as a 3c. That's a red flag for me.

Ehhh...where are you getting these numbers from?

Natty has John's 5v5 xG at 8.17 and xGA at 7.6, for an xG% of 51.8% which was good for 11th on the team, nevermind 3rd in the playoffs.

I think keefe is a good coach but I do see two things I don’t like 1) he hasn’t been able to tap in and get his guys to play pissed off. Not totally his failing, and it’s a line that you need to tow carefully, but on some level you do need to drive and push the troops and he hasn’t been able to do it (like so what if Marner and Matthews get pouty they’ll deal with it). 2) he struggles a bit to adjust. Keefes teams are at their best when he’s able to get the third forward up high involved and dmen pinching down the wings. The leafs best play under Keefe has been when they’ve asserted that five man cycle (think, when he first started, they game planned it in and theN went on a 20 game tear). And their struggles all seem to coincide with an inability to establish that cycle.

In any event, he's not gonna pack his shit after his wife just had another kid. He's staying. But they should probably prioritize a 2c because this ain't working.

Yep. Not a chance in hell he waives his NMC. We’re stuck with him.
