The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

.
There's no point is creating that drama. Winnipeg had good reason. they missed the playoffs and their C was a total asshole. I'm not seeing a big deal here to risk anything.

I don’t see John even caring that much…I’m sure he’s proud to have been given the C, but also recognizes it’s something Matthews should probably be given now.

Fair.….I just know some tune them out completely/dont care….which seems crazy given the drought we lived through for so long.

We are on the longest playoff streak in the NHL currently, along with Boston I believe,
Until we win something, that is akin to showing up at the bar every weekend and not getting laid.

Matthews really doesn't show leadership qualities, though. The only reason you're even suggesting it is because he scores the most points (*except when his team is about to be eliminated) . That's not a reason to name someone the captain. in fact it's probably an extra burden Matthews doesn't need.

If you're going to strip the C from the guy who scored the goal that won the first playoff series for the Leafs since 2004, the only other legit option would be Morgan Rielly.

Good man.

Very different response than when ROR was asked today. Ummm, right now I'm thinking about the loss, so I haven't even thought about next year, and will do that in a couple of weeks, and this organization is first class from top to bottom, but yeah I haven't thought about it yet.

yeah I was just thinking…the best value of a captain may even be their ability to deal with the refs and potentially earn you some calls.

….but I do recall hearing that they didn’t want to give Rielly the C because he already carries such a load leadership wise, and is so hard on himself or something they didn’t want him having that additional burden.

He unquestionably is the most heart and soul guy, that bleeds blue tho.

Woll as starter with Hildeby starting for the Marlies is pretty exciting for me tbh. and maybe Petruzzelli is worthwhile too.

and while I don't love Murray.....not sure keeping him as Woll's backup and trading sammy's rights might not make more sense in the end, value wise.

Maybe the top 6 left winger we are looking for is ... John Tavares.

Bring in a speedy #2C, JT's nerdies probably go up on the wing, can still bring back ROR as #3C if desired.
I'd be down for this too.

And by the way, there's no law (I researched it) that says he must be 1LW all year long, or even all game long. He's versatile enough and obviously flexible enough to play wing or center. So he can do both, just as he did for a bit this season.

But you don't just dump a guy who can score like him because the UFA premium is bugging you. There's plenty of money to spend to bolster the lineup. It would be the dumbest thing in the world to delete him because first it would be a dump (how many teams can take on a $11m cap hit and would pay anything when you're trying to ditch your captain early?), and second we'd need to then go hunting for 35-40 goals from someone else or multiple others (who are they, how do we acquire them, and how much will they cost?). This trade Tavares nonsense is a fool's errand.

It would be a form of what they did with Engvall. Don't subtract anything good from the roster. Remove the bad and add more skill.

Could be disastrous. Woll ends up not being good after 10 games, and Murray being injured or ineffective as always.

Not sure if mentioned but your cap guy is getting GM interviews -- including one from the Flames

Can’t pay a shitty backup that will 100% get hurt $5 mill. Dumping that contract and signing Sammy for less is a key of the off-season.

how much less than Murray's $4.6m is Sammy going to sign for tho? and do we retain any on murray? and how much confidence do we have in sammy really?

and if we can get assets for Sammy, while not giving up any assets to dump Murray, then we could come out a good chunk ahead.

and it would be an encouraging statement of our belief in Woll and Hildeby.
