The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

A Toronto boy gets to play for his hometown team late in his career, after he's won a cup elsewhere, and put his no-skill arsenal on display and failed to help us do anything when it mattered, despite getting force-fed PP time over a far superior player, and then is offered to re-up but instead takes a cheap deal to go play for a bubble team about to rebuild in Nashville to close out his career.

That doesn't tell me squat about the Leafs' situation. It tells me a lot about the player and where his head's at.

would surely be nice to have him over the captain, but i'm definitely happier having Bertuzzi than ROR, so that turned out ok.

of course, I'd rather have O'Reilly plus $2.5m dman than Domi and Klingberg, though it's also nice not to only have one year committments.

I would guess the difference between toronto and nashville offers was the 4th year tbh.

This is so absurd, it's not even funny, but the absurdity will ultimately be borne out by reality in the very near term.

I would also have had ROR on this team, but on the same basis that I was happy with him at the deadline - as a 3C who got utilized as one, and on a short deal. I have no desire for four years of what I saw in his brief stint, of him getting to be 2C, and I'm sure we dodged a major bullet that he has no desire to win anything more in his career. That's exactly the kind of player we should be avoiding, so luckily he did us the favor of avoiding us. As they say, sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make. This is one of those times.

From the day ROR was added through playoffs:

Center X: EV 14:51, +4.4dzs%, 17gl/48pt pace, +0, 52.8xgf% --- PP 2:02, 7gl/21pt pace --- PK 1:10
Center Y: EV 14:49, -10.4dzs%, 16gl/39pt pace, -7, 51.6xgf% --- PP 3:12, 21gl/36pt pace --- PK 0:01

Name the 2C name the 3C.

I know, you've provided stats before. I've beseeched you to watch a game for once. And round we go.

Aside from his first game (regular season) as a Leaf, ROR was a no-skill bum wasting space out there.

yep the conn smythe cup winner with consistently better even strength stats in tougher usage with lesser linemates year after year after year definitely just fluked it in his time here.

but yeah, at least correct yourself on "used as a 3C", unless you mean 3Cs get bigger tougher usage than 2Cs.

Yeah you can think Tavares is better... Tbh I think I believe that too.. but he was absolutely used as the 3c with ROR here. ROR was the clearcut 2C in every game he placed C.

Leafs Second Round exit, Oilers second round exit.

Leafs younger than Oilers from top to bottom.

Leafs Out: O'Reilly, Bunting, Kerfoot, Acciari, ZAR, Holl, Schenn, Gustafsson, Murray
Oilers Out: Bjugstad, Yamamoto, Kostin

Hockey World:

Leafs: "how come they won't shake it up?"
Oilers: "cup faves"

McDavid and Draisaitl infinitely more likeable than the guys we’ve got. I’m sure that plays some part. Besides that it’s obviously we’re the Mecca of hockey and it’s not even close

Wait...why is McDavid likeable?

Dude is a fence post that is probably at least mildly on the spectrum. Which is cool, not everyone has to be Ryan Reaves, but looking angry 90% of the time isn't a personality, nor is it likeable.

Sick player though, yeah.

McDavid is neither likeable or unlikable, he emits superstar built in a lab without enough RAM left for a personality.

Same as Mike Trout

That's what I said above. That if he was used as 3C, which I thought was the plan when we got him, then great, welcome aboard; and going forward, stay aboard for the right price and term. But they used him as a 2C and the guy could barely make a decent pass, and had next to no scoring touch. He's basically a grunt now, with some lucky stats, and it was on display for anyone who wanted to look past the numbers to see the player fumble all over the ice. To compare him to Tavares is really insulting the captain.
