Matthews has been the best 5v5 player in the league for a while now.

I guess you could dock him for not putting up as many PP points as some others, but the Leafs' PP is elite every year while not getting a ton of opportunities so i'm not sure his lower individual PP pts are much of a criticism really.

There should really be no concern whatsoever about Matthews being worth his contract in the regular season.

To be worth the contract though, he really needs to do what he hasn’t done so far and put the team on his back and deep-dick the playoffs multiple times in the next five years.

Hell…forget an elite goalie, Canada doesn’t even really have a single good goalie right now.

Out of every Canadian goalie who played 40 games or more last year, somehow Stuart Skinner’s .914 SV% is the high water mark. No other Canadian goalie cracked the .910 mark and only six in total finished with a save percentage higher than .900 (Skinner, Jarry, Kuemper, Fleury, Hart, Montembeault).

Crazy how the Canadian goalie pipeline just dried up completely once we ran out of French Canadian kids who’d grown up idolizing Patrick Roy.
