The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Breaking down those practice groups...

Group 2

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Nylander - Robertson
Knies - Tavares - Lafferty
Gregor - Kampf - Reaves
Cowan

Rielly - Liljegren
McCabe - Brodie
Giordano - Klingberg
Lagesson - Timmins

Samsonov
Woll

yeah Siegel was understating it - that's not "mostly" leafs, that's the entire leafs team.

That's pretty huge for Cowan.

Man if they trade Jarn to inject Robertson and give Cowan 9 games, that would be awesome and not something Dubas (or Keefe on his own) would have ever done or pushed for.

Granted, I know they haven't actually decided that Cowan has made the team. If he fades even a little he's probably donezo. But it sure would be fun to give the talented kids a shot to surround the big boys. No better team to do it.. They will have ample protection and sheltering.

Also a nice statement for Robertson too being in that group, while guys like Holmberg Gambrell Steeves are not.

though not so great for Holmberg. who didn't do anything yesterday. really dissappointing. he was great last preseason.

Yeah this is the "you have not made the team" group. Too bad about Holmberg. He was pretty shit last night and it may have cost him a look unless he really picks it up here.

I would re-order those AHL lines at least tho. Holmberg/Shaw would clearly be the top line. Based on those combos, marlies look something like...

Hirvonen - Holmberg - Shaw
Steeves - Gambrell - McMann
Clifford - Blandisi - Ellis
Abruzzese - Tverberg - Slavin
Suthers

those are ES points right?

cue LOF post telling us why we should ignore the counting stats...

Yeah, that's even strength.

For reference, here's the other 3 over the same period

Matthews: All - 37pts in 37gms (82pts), ES 24pts in 37gms (53pts)
Marner: All - 34 pts in 37gms (75pts), ES 19pts in 37gms (42pts)
Nylander: All - 32 pts in 37gms (71pts), ES 24pts in 37gms (53pts)

Now, keep in mind with those 3 above (unlike the other 2 mentioned previously) that there are some early career seasons involved in their samples. Rielly & Tavares are both in prime over those 5 years.

If we look at the last 2 years for the younger guys:

Matthews: All - 20pts in 18 (92pts) ES - 14pts in 18 (64pts)
Marner: All - 22pts in 18 (100pts) ES - 13pts in 18 (59pts)
Nylander: All - 17pts in 18 (77pts) ES - 11pts in 18 (50pts)

and our two guys who were in prime during those years

Tavares: 14 pts in 18 gms (64pts) ES - 10pts in 18gms (46pts)
Rielly: 18 pts in 18 games (82pts) ES - 15pts in 18 gms (68pts)

Yeah, #MorganRiellyIsInMyCore4

I also was impressed by Kokkonen last night too. Might have something there.

always liked him but was worried about his skating.....but his skating is looking very good so far this camp. nice all-around skillset. a kid that was known for his shutdown D first.

Benoit practicing with the Marlies in a red jersey today.

McMann practicing with the Marlies full contact.

Man would it be refreshing to see Tavares flanked by two kids like Knies/Robertson/Cowan. Might go straight to his legs.

sending out Jarnkrok would also mean that they have a good amount of confidence in the likes of McMann/Holmberg/Gambrell as call-up depth.

O'Reilly (17, #33): OHL 73gms, 16gls, 71pts
Cowan (17, #28): OHL 88gms, 29gls, 74pts

O'Reilly (18, #33): NHL 87gms, 9gls, 27pts
Cowan (18, #28): ???

In my opinion, our single biggest organization level mistake over the last 3-4 seasons has been in basically having zero roster spots available that weren't earmarked for a shitty "veteran" and having our kids need to kick the fucking door in and be significantly better than any random piece of shit we signed to a min deal or fucking PTO, to get them ice.

Player progression doesn't work like that and if your give a fuck level about winning a random tuesday game in fucking November is that high, then you're never going to know what's in your system. Give Robbie a few months to stick, give Gregor a shot to stick, give Cowan however many games he can get before we have to send him back to junior, etc. It's not difficult to find random Lafferty's for fuck all off the waiver wire or on the trade market for cheap throughout the season. We seemed to worry way too much about having our random scrubs locked in for October (won't somebody think about the penalty kill!!!) and not nearly worried enough about 3C's, Muzzin replacements, and top 6 wingers.

I would legit go pants free for a week if they unloaded dead weight veterans and gave the kids a shot. It would be a bit of a bumpier ride in the 1st half of the season, but with the potential for an actual payoff.
