The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I think the transparency was really refreshing…..do think there is a balance to it tho, and Shanny did it in a way that shirked all responsibility for the decision and buried Dubas.

think there was a manner of sharing lots, being transparent, and not burying Kyle. dunno.
But if the truth necessarily buries Dubas, is Shanny wrong for disclosing it?

Aren't the organization and the fans owed not operating under a cloud of confusion as to what happened here?

…can’t wait to blame Preston more, when Auston doesn’t sign for 8 now.

first call Shanny made today was dialling Auston's digits

speculators have been saying 5 yrs, which makes sense given Cap is lagging inflation and will eventually catch up

Yeah, I'm struggling with the logic from anyone questioning this:

Shanny: Hey, here's a contract, we want you back...all good?
Dubas: Yeah, looks all good...need some time to think about it though, talk to the wife, you know. Was a tough year on her.
Shanny: M'kay
Kyle (on tv): I'm not sure if I have it in me to continue doing the job, it's killing my family life
Shanny:....wtf?
Kyle:..............
Kyle:...........mo money
Shanny: nah, peace homes.
I do find it funny that it only took him a few days to put a price on his family life.

The more I think about it I recall Shannys first presser where he said the most important thing in this market is being able to stick to the plan and not be swayed by the noise. Dubas always had the resolve.

but then on Monday it became “I don’t know if can do it anymore, and I’m ready to bail on the plan.”

That changed everything for Shanny. He no longer had faith in Dubas to carry out the Shannyplan.

He's definitely talked to the big boys. I'm sure Tavares even got a courtesy call as the captain, that Rielly was also spoken to, and I'd have to imagine Marner too. I'd hope Willy as well, but like with everything else, I'm sure they left him out.

Given everything else Shanny was willing to say, you’d think he’d have mentioned that if it was the case.

Yeah it sounds like it wasn't hockey related or anything related to his performance. Shanny would have said it.

Also, let's remember that Shanny is a former high performing, championship-winning player.

Things like Dubie's presser might be passable for the average corporate guy, but for someone who has all sorts of intangibles drilled into him over the years about a winning mentality, I think that ended it for him there.

And if you listened closely to that part of the presser where Shanny says "I've been in this game for a long time and I know..." - I promise you that he shifted mid-gear there when he went on to talk about family considerations, and what was instead going through his mind was that he knows a broken or losing spirit when he sees one. That was 100% his reason for bailing on Dubas.

he said it was because of the presser.

I actually disagree that he hurried Dubas. He was very kind to him and went out of his way to compliment and not criticize him. But obviously he lost faith otherwise he just would have kept him.

What Dubas said was what I’d hope any GM would do….not assume they have always had the right answer, and always be reevaluating, evolving, questioning your priors, etc.

And it showed in his personnel decisions leading up to this. He was lost. The pressor only confirmed what many of us have been saying.

I think Shanny was rightfully waiting for Kyle to dive in with enthusiasm about an extended term.

It's like an employer giving an employee a big raise or extension that he believes is a no-brainer and a generous offer, and the employee says "let me think about it" or even worse "that's all???". And Dubie kinda did both here, while telling everyone who'd listen that he didn't even know if he wanted to work here anymore.

That he mishandled the situation so badly for himself opens up all sorts of questions about his fitness for the job.

I mean...he's signed for one more season so any deal would be an extension, and he probably has a chronic wrist issue that will come and go but likely never go away. If he wants a 5 year deal so he can re-up at 32 years old instead of us paying him 13 million until he's 35....okay.
