The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

In the end I think the right decision was made. That dubas presser shook me, and i was already fine with him not coming back before that.

I'm somewhat concerned with shanny's behavior here (that he was so comfortable extending Dubas after the deadline, that his opinion could change so drastically, and that he went public with everything here - all are maybe a big concerning0, but in terms of what that means for the team going forward.....I come out of this presser more reassured that Shanny appreciates the type of management that Dubas brought to the table, and will probably try to get someone more like that than go for some big philosophical change. I don't think this presser should make us worry that Shanny will start making emotional decisions going forward or even start interfering any more than he ever has.
If you see your top guy make decisions that you're not so clear on, and then later find out he's an alcoholic, it changes how you view his decision-making on those questionable moves.

He was comfortable extending Dubie despite his moves, until he saw that he was either actually on fire mentally or was posturing that he was in order to get more money. Either way, the right move is to cut bait.

i mean he went on at length about how he wasn't sure he was up to being GM.
I went back to rewatch it just now, to refresh.

….and in fairness he did talk as if he’d be back as GM, when talking about analyzing the team, his philosophy, preparing for the draft, and free agency etc etc….one of the first questions, he replied as if it was already done.

It wasn’t until Chris Johnson’s (kinda weird out of nowhere) question on if he has it in him to return, that he got reflective on it all…and kinda said it’s a discussion he has to have with his family first, got emotional, etc.

Like he says it’s unfair to answer it fully, without talking to them……to me I read it as someone who had his wife share some heavy feelings the toll it’s taken on her and out of respect he wasnt going to slam the table for CJ, about how committed he was to returning etc.

(even tho as I said, you go back to the start of the presser, he replied discussion his process and it seemed like he was already back),

…also I don’t think anyone can watch him in our press box these playoffs and question his commitment or passion for the team.

….and the end of the presser is him talking about the future like he’s going to be there. (Talks about prospects stepping in,…and “that’s where we need to get to” etc)

Bottom line is that anyone asks the GM in public if he wants to stay, the answer is absolutely, there's still a job to be done here, and we're in the process of working out the details.

There's no other right answer in that scenario.

I feel a bit gaslit by Shanny that this presser implied Dubas himself didn’t want to be back.….he really spends much of it talking like he knows he’ll be here.

I get that that was riveting, and it was mind blowing moment to moment……but I think when people have time to reflect on what we just witnessed, they’ll have a much different take on it.

He kinda burried Dubas in a pretty shitty way….while basically blaming Dubas for his own firing,
He took a young guy with little experience and gave him the job of a lifetime. He fought through the noise of boomers on staff to get him that.

And he gets a last minute email with new demands?

Yeah I don't blame him.

Stress got to him. He threw the family thing out there either because he’s cracking or to posture for $$ and both are off putting if I’m deciding whether to give the guy a life changing contract.

Pretty hard to watch him answer and bring up the family and not recognize it as sincere……and I’m kinda floored people in 2023 would be put off by someone showing consideration for his family.

super cornball.

Dude inherited or lucked into every major impact player the team has and failed to put a good enough supporting team around them. Also couldn't reel in his young new age wonder coach when he started going full Don Cherry.

Then he told the whole world he wasn't sure he wanted the job anymore.

It's been a slice, but time to move on.

Also the experience thing could just be shanny saying he doesn’t want to hire another 30 ear old. And that’s fair. It’s a tough job for a young parent.

It’s not so weird to spew the normal cliches before breaking down into a moment of revelatory candour.

Also, off the top he describes his relationship with Shanny in the past tense

Yeah that’s it too. Dubas did well but no franchise altering moves under his watch and he inherited the 2 best players this team has had since BC times and 4 of
The top 10-15.

He said that after agreeing in principle to an extension…then reneged and (apparently) massively upped his demand.

at the same time, that does sound like some good reporting there - the right question to pry open a revealing response.
