Tkachuk himself has said that he wanted to sign for 8 years instead of getting bridged. Johnny should have been extended or traded a year before he left.

To fumble all of that and respond by signing 24 million worth of looong ass term deals to 29-31 yr old guys is and was firing worthy.

Yeah, such bad deals.

I mean, why didn't he at least shoot for another team's younger potential stars than getting the aging relics he got?

Because there was a gun to his head that he did 90% of the work putting to his own head.

- Calgary was in a fake "win now" mode despite not being a very good team, so maximizing the immediate value of the player's coming was his priority

- It all fell apart quite quickly with Tkachuk and he was forced to make a deal with whoever had the best deal on the table right now.

I'm down with that too.

Use Pridham as a de facto interim.

Yeah, I'm good with an interim if we're not in love with anyone available out there and don't want to rush it. Pridham has been AGM for something like 5 years now. Shanny also apparently made all of the decisions anyway so not much would change according to the media.

And this way we'd be assured that no 5th rounders were being traded for anything less than can't miss players.

(I know it was fake).

you can certainly argue whether the Huberdeau/Weegar trade and contract extensions were good ideas or not.

But Johnny Gaudreau left as a free agent, as was his right. Competitive teams are generally in the habit of adding impact players to the roster leading into the playoffs, not trading away a star because he's a UFA. Especially for a homegrown guy you think will re-sign.

And this narrative about Tkachuk is, IMO, revisionist history nonsense. I don't believe that Matthew Tkachuk was a contrite "aw shucks, I want nothing more than a fair long-term deal, sir" during the negotiations. That entire family is a bunch of fucking asshole mercenaries. I don't give a shit what he said after the fact.

It's a "firing offense" just like not signing Auston Matthews to an 8-year deal was. Sometimes the shorter deal just makes more sense, especially when the player is driving the bus.

I agree, but luckily for us, Toronto is not Calgary, and we don't have much to worry about Matty resigning.
