The Search for the New GM Thread

ou can certainly argue whether the Huberdeau/Weegar trade and contract extensions were good ideas or not.

But Johnny Gaudreau left as a free agent, as was his right. Competitive teams are generally in the habit of adding impact players to the roster leading into the playoffs, not trading away a star because he's a UFA. Especially for a homegrown guy you think will re-sign.

Calgary legit missed the playoffs the year prior. You're stretching "competitive team" to the breaking point here.

"81 point pace team lets core player go into final season of his current deal without an extension" is a way more apt way to put it....aka, dumb as fuck.

I'm not talking about at that deadline, I'm talking about the summer previous. If you don't have him extended, trade him. A team like Calgary is going to struggle to add marquee talent in free agency, but turning Johnny G into other players is relatively easy.
And this narrative about Tkachuk is, IMO, revisionist history nonsense. I don't believe that Matthew Tkachuk was a contrite "aw shucks, I want nothing more than a fair long-term deal, sir" during the negotiations. That entire family is a bunch of fucking asshole mercenaries. I don't give a shit what he said after the fact.

His asshole mercenary brother signed an 8 year deal in Ottawa. Why should we not take Matt at his word that he wanted an 8 year deal in Calgary?

Regardless of where he was, he probably wanted to secure that bag so early on, and like many others, not worry about the team because who knows where he might be traded to mid way through the contract.

Forget Brady - if McDavid signed a max deal in Edmonton, why should we believe Tkachuk would've refused to do that in Calgary?

I personally think both Johnny and Tkachuk would have signed long term

Treliving was a pussy and chose a bridge deal approach because he wasn’t sure they were max guys

then they hired Sutter and the studs decided no more

The fact that the likes of Dreger & Lebrun are so horny for the Leafs to hire Treliving is honestly reassuring to me.

Since I’m pretty confident both of them don’t have the first fucking clue what Shanahan is thinking or doing and are too stupid to even luck into a correct wild guess about who he’ll ultimately hire.
They both have good relationships with him, if course they want it. Need out of Calgary wasn't hard to get.

Jokes aside if the Shanny rumors of telling the core they are safe is true it will limit candidates willing to come in

I don’t think so — Leafs ain’t some aging bubble team that needs a rebuild. If the new guy is smart he won’t be swayed by an entire city’s emotional baggage

Especially when being susceptible to Leaf Nation's emotional baggage is exactly what eventually did Dubas in, by his own admission.

anyway forget the core four — that shit is banal. The first intv question posed by Shanahan will be “How strong is your marriage?”

amirite Habsy?

I just see from a perspective being handcuffed before you start. They are very nice soft handcuffs but I believe anyone would like the ability to explore any and all options to improve your team.

I truly dont believe there is move out there for any of those guys that wouldn't be a downgrade but at best you have to let the new GM explore their options

Breaking up the core is probably dumb, but so is announcing that they are “safe”

WTF does that even mean?

Ask DeMar

Not really my point though. They could be all for running it back but they also wouldnt be doing their job if they didnt explore the market for them either.

All great players but if there is a deal out there that has a player who is a better fit for your vision you should be allowed to explore that option

I think any GM hire would be able to make the team better… my point is also that no player is truly safe. Unless they have an NMC

Coming in to the job a new GM's approach kind of has to be "listen to the market and if someone is blowing their brains out... fine, .maybe. But I'd really like to see what I can surround these guys with for the 17-20 million I'm going to have in cap space"

There are teams looking to dump good players every summer, often with retention. There are good depth players that slip through the cracks in free agency every summer. If you can't get excited about this situation, you're in the wrong profession.
