The Search for the New GM Thread

I don’t see how Americans not wanting to sign in Calgary was Trevlings fault. All our players very openly want to stay anyway.
bridging Tkachuk was stupid if he had the option to sign him long-term instead.

what we don't know is whether ownership was willing to pony up and/or whether Tkachuk would have signed.

Some of Treiliving’s greatest hits on the contract front, for reference’s sake:

Huberdeau 10.5 x 8
Kadri 7 x 7
Monahan 6.375 x 7
Markstrom 6 x 6
Neal 5.75 x 5
Coleman 4.9 x 6
Hiller 4.5 x 2
Brouwer 4.5 x 4
Frolik 4.3 x 5
Zadorov 3.75 x 2
Stone 3.5 x 3
Bouma 2.2 x 3

Yep, I'll go from #fireeveryone to #fireeveryonepart2electricboogaloo if we hire Treliving

I wouldn't hire any GM that had to give up a first to correct his own mistake (Monahan).

It's different if the GM is new and fixing things.

Yeah, either A) Let them walk in free agency or B) trade them for 2 31 yr olds and promptly sign those 2 to 8 year contract extensions
Bit of column A, bit of column B. The timing lines up perfectly for Matthews to be his next Gaudreau and Marner his next Tkachuk. Almost seems scripted.

Or maybe he snowed them with "won't make that mistake again" contrite BS?

He's not my preference but I'd wanna give Treiliving a chance to work around what I feel like is a stronger management group than what they had in Calgary. He helped build a strong team even if some of those contracts he gave were very un-Dubas-like. We're used to a GM that signs 0 crippling contracts but that's not the norm across the league.. We may have to prepare for some stinkers.

Maybe, but I don't see anything remotely impressive about his resume. Was an AGM forever in Arizona, and since he took over the Flames they've had 2 good regular seasons in a sweetheart division, and no playoff success.

Their drafting has been hit & miss but looks pretty anemic after you factor in Adam Fox refusing to sign. Did good work in the 2015-2016 drafts and kind of meh/shit since. It hasn't been terrible overall, but it's not a reason to hand him they keys to the ferrari either.

I understand the benefit of experience, but bad experience is worse than no experience imo and by a lot. Dude has decades of experience for bad/mediocre organizations that have produced mostly bad & mediocre teams.

Treliving is still fairly young for a gm.

Seems pretty good to me tbh. You can argue he gave out a lot of shit contracts but it's hard for me to ignore that he built a team that was consistently top 5-10 in the nerdies by the end after inheriting literal trash.

Seems pretty good to me tbh.

Twice in his tenure were they better than a bubble team. His best players at the start of his tenure were the best players throughout his entire tenure aside from the 6th overall pick he got from being bad. Flirted with Dougie Hamilton for a few years but turned him (and Adam Fox) into Hanifin & Lindholm (who looks pretty pedestrian aside from one crazy season).
