TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Agreed. I wouldn't even be too upset if we ended up retaining 1 million per to get a deal done and take someone else's money to get the deal done.

I think we're way more likely to move Holl and keep Muzzin, then shuffle Sandin onto Gio/Rielly's right side

Rielly-Lilly/Sandin
Muzzin-Brodie
Gio-Lilly/Sandin

As for Kerfoot, I don't think he's a dump at all. He'll get us back something decent.

Agreed. I'd much rather see us go with:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-XXXXXX (~1.5)
Steeves/Douglas/Abruzesse/Anderson/XXXXXX (~3M total)

Rielly-Lilly
Muzzin-Brodie
Gio-Sandin
XXXXXX

Which would come in around 74 million, and spend the rest in net. Evaluate our cheap in-house options and then go shopping at the deadline for what we need. We have a bunch of these 22-24 yr old fringe guys that are either going to look like NHL players or not, let's find out. Our depth doesn't have to be dialed in by November, it needs to be dialed in by April-May.
If we need to retain on Mraz may as well just buy him out.

If Gibson was a UFA what would he get on a 5 year contract? And what would you pay him if you're the Leafs? 3.5? 4m if lucky maybe? In that case, ask the Ducks to retain 2.4m and give them a middling asset or 2 if that's the direction you want to take.
I would be interested in Gibson if we pay less than $4m on the cap.

Of course they are. 5 x 30 m incoming.

Maybe not that loony. But I could see them going 4-4.5x4 or something. Go Jack-Smith this season (upgrade over Smith-Koskinen) and then Jack-Skinner after that.

"Fixing" your goaltending is relative to your current situation. Edmonton's situation this year was junk. They got fortunate with a late season Smith heater.

Yeah, that's about the number I was figuring. 2.4 million retained. He's worth the gamble at 4 million imo and that leaves salary cap room to have a Plan B to hedge the gamble.

If they do see Kahkonen as their goalie of the future and do pay his RFA rate (probably 3.5+), I'm not against picking up Reimer for nothing as our 1B/Backup. He's still entirely functional, and is signed for cheap next season.
I have been on the Reim train for a while.

The risk with Holtby is, which Holtby do you get? He was fucking terrible for the 2 seasons previous to last year and was good, just good as a pure backup last season. That's another guy (like Gibson) that I think you need to understand why he was bad before you can consider trusting him as part of your solution. Tough to bet 2-3 million dollars and 2-3 years on him and that's what he'll likely cost.
Big no thanks to Holtby from me.

I’d be Ok with that. Price & term is right, and he’s been a consistently solid platoon/backup guy since leaving Toronto.

As long as he’s very clearly the 1B to another better goalie that we bring in to tandem up with him. And no Jonathan Bernier, plz.

Yeah, I think my ideal is some combination of 1A with experience and pedigree. Varly, Gibson, Kuemper, etc

and then a backup that falls into one of two catergories. Experienced and relatively consistent 1B (Reimer, DeSmith) or risky and inexperienced with some maybe potential and good recent numbers backup who can potentially be a 1A if we're fortunate (Kahkonen, Comrie, Stolarz, etc).

I'm getting kinda horny over a Gibson-Reimer combo...

I think I'm still a Gibson believer. But of course stay the hell away - far, far away - unless Anaheim retains a bunch.
Can't you just like watch regular porn like the rest of mankind?
