TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

In fairness Leafs team goaltending was shit throughout the season because of Mrazek and Kallgren, not Jack. Jack at .914 was fine. If their backup was also at .914 their team save percentage would have been 2nd in the NHL. They just need a second Jack.

Sure, but when it gets to best on best (playoffs), .914 would be middle of the pack among starters.

Which is fine, functional, professional. But hardly a strength to the point where we shouldn't be interested in trying to upgrade.

Jack has been very good, but he had a last 2 years of Freddy year.

Vezina calibre October/November and then sub .900 in the second half when it mattered most.

that second half was concerning. But hey Freddy found it again eventually,

Point is to have 2 Jacks to increase your odds of a heater when it matters most. Something like Jack had in the first few months of this season, for example. Your logic only works if every .914 goalie played at exactly .914 across all stretches of every season. It doesn't work that way.

If Varlamov is moved he makes too much sense. One year deal. Maybe NYI eat $1 mill or so. Borderline top 10 guy.

pair him with a Jack, Lehner type and you are going to feel about as good as your going to feel without some team trading you a great goalie for no reason.

if NYI eats half that’s a $6-7 mill tandem that has a chance to give you top 10 goaltending at least.

Thanks, me from 3 days ago.
I've never disagreed with you. I disagree with this idea that you need to spend big bucks on a "starter" that barely even exists throughout the league. Leafs should do exactly what they tried last year. Except sign a better goalie than Mrazek this time. They haven't done anything wrong other than player evaluation.

And all I'm saying is don't blow the money from day one of the regular season. Use it on a forward and then add a vet goalie at the deadline for peanuts. The likelihood of that vet goalie giving you more or less what any other tandem guy you sign upfront is very high, so use up just a smidge of the cap on that backup position because the most likely result is he won't even play a minute of the playoffs.

Jack is good enough to win it all. That's all that matters. He was one goal for away from probably getting ready to play the Avs now. Bring him back on a relatively cheap deal and then add his insurance guy at the deadline. Keep the majority of the money invested in forwards who need to score if the big boys don't.

I'm really interested in what San Jose is doing with Kahkonen. San Jose has 2 goalies under contract next season and Kahkonen is a RFA. 25 yrs old, was .927 in the AHL as a 22 yr old, .920 in Liiga as a 19-20 yr old, .925 as a 17 yr old in Mestis (finnish AHL). It's the kind of track record that a guy who breaks out into a top 10 goalie would typically have.

Varlamov + Kahkonen would be pretty fucking ideal from where we are at the moment.

Based on what the Sharks GM said about Kahkonen... They acquired him to be their goalie of the future. They're reallllly high on him. He's going nowhere. He was apparently a target of theirs for awhile.

If they do see Kahkonen as their goalie of the future and do pay his RFA rate (probably 3.5+), I'm not against picking up Reimer for nothing as our 1B/Backup. He's still entirely functional, and is signed for cheap next season.

How much is Holtby getting now a days....

I could go for a Campbell/Holtby tandem.

The risk with Holtby is, which Holtby do you get? He was fucking terrible for the 2 seasons previous to last year and was good, just good as a pure backup last season. That's another guy (like Gibson) that I think you need to understand why he was bad before you can consider trusting him as part of your solution. Tough to bet 2-3 million dollars and 2-3 years on him and that's what he'll likely cost.

Worst thing we could do is repeat the Mrazek mristake.

Just go with the cheap backup, then see which goalie of a noncontending team is doing well and grab him in April. Sheesh.
