TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Here's a list of goalies listed on the Marlies website from last season, first thought - that's a lot of goalies:

Mrazek should be easily flushed if you attach a pick/prospect to him.

There are numerous tank stations out there.

Kerfoot should be an easy dump as well, and i think Muzzin can move without salary back ( and a decent return)

The Leafs cap issue isnt that bleak unless you are Darren Dreger.

No reason they cant commit 8-9M on two 4.5M goalies.
Kerf and Muzzin get value, what are you even talking about.

Agreed. I wouldn't even be too upset if we ended up retaining 1 million per to get a deal done and take someone else's money to get the deal done.

I think we're way more likely to move Holl and keep Muzzin, then shuffle Sandin onto Gio/Rielly's right side

Rielly-Lilly/Sandin
Muzzin-Brodie
Gio-Lilly/Sandin

As for Kerfoot, I don't think he's a dump at all. He'll get us back something decent.

Agreed. I'd much rather see us go with:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-XXXXXX (~1.5)
Steeves/Douglas/Abruzesse/Anderson/XXXXXX (~3M total)

Rielly-Lilly
Muzzin-Brodie
Gio-Sandin
XXXXXX

Which would come in around 74 million, and spend the rest in net. Evaluate our cheap in-house options and then go shopping at the deadline for what we need. We have a bunch of these 22-24 yr old fringe guys that are either going to look like NHL players or not, let's find out. Our depth doesn't have to be dialed in by November, it needs to be dialed in by April-May.

But again, the point is to have 2 guys who are similar caliber. Two Jack types. Neither can be trusted as full-time starters, but you can platoon them. They tried that last year with Mrazek. This is what Dubas wanted and what he'll continue to strive for. You're still stuck in 2004 I think. Really only 2 guys can be trusted as a full-time starter these days. Maybe 3 if lucky. So you buy 2 for the price of 1 good one and hope for the best. It's better than paying a lot for one. Or paying a little for 1 with Kallgren as the backup.

But Dubas knows this. He tried this last year with Mrazek and he'll try it again when he admits his mistake and trades or buys out his ass.
I understand your position, I just don't agree it’s the best move for us the way we’re built. I also don’t think we’ll find two Jacks for $8m-$9m. I still also buy in to the mental sensitivity aspect of this thing, that one guy should be confident he owns the net and isn’t at risk of losing it at any time.

wait...what?

Why?

Jack is about as average a tandem goalie as exists in the league. Those go in the 3.5-4.5 range. Shit, we got one last year in that range, we're just terrible evaluators of goaltending apparently.

If Gibson was a UFA what would he get on a 5 year contract? And what would you pay him if you're the Leafs? 3.5? 4m if lucky maybe? In that case, ask the Ducks to retain 2.4m and give them a middling asset or 2 if that's the direction you want to take.

Jack is good. I know nobody wants to believe it, but he is. The attempts to get another Jack means something else to me than it does to you guys. The majority of the rest out there are Mrazeks, not Jacks.

To be fair, they've had horrible luck with injuries at all levels. Looking closer - some of the the older guys were ECHL guys signed out of U-sports, I assume due to injury.

But I like the idea of developing goalies any way we can, sign young goalies and "loan" them to Euro teams.

Jack would be fine as a starter as long as you're not expecting to contend. we're supposedly an elite team. bottom third of the league goaltending is not even good enough for a playoff aspirant, let alone a contender.

In fairness Leafs team goaltending was shit throughout the season because of Mrazek and Kallgren, not Jack. Jack at .914 was fine. If their backup was also at .914 their team save percentage would have been 2nd in the NHL. They just need a second Jack.
