TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

I could maybe see 4.5 for 3 years on Jack. Mik... Maybe 3.5-4 on a 4 or 5 year deal. They will obviously ask for more than what they expect though.

What was your initial projection for Jack's contract earlier in the season? I remember you were so shy about discussing contracts in the in-season thread.
When he was hot as balls I thought north of 5 easily if he kept it up, maybe up to 6. Now... I don't see the resume that justifies north of 5. By all means, he should ask for it. I just don't think he'll get it.

I think Jack has been so shit on in these boards that it's fucked the minds of everyone here.

He had an inconsistent year, but a very good year. He had great playoffs numbers last year, and was good enough this year. If you're Edmonton or even Colorado and seeing what your goaltending did or is doing this postseason, I think Jack looks like a huge add to the non-Leaf observer. I don't give any goalie 5 years, but other teams probably will and Jack may not be able to resist it despite those cold Edmonton winters. So I'd love to get him at $4M or less, but I dunno if it'll be possible. Entirely depends on if he really wants to be a Leaf. The margin may only be $1M, but that's still probably $3M or $4M total over the term, so we'll see. I do still think he's by far our best option.

Pick one.

.894 after the all star break, followed up with .897 in the playoffs. Let's not fall in love with a career best heater during early season. Good dude, I hope he gets paid, just not by us.

I'm still on board with Jack, but he was definitely inconsistent. I mean he was probably the best goalie in the league the first month or two ... but didn't he have a loooooong stretch in the middle where he was one of the absolute worst? Questionable in the playoffs and between the ears, and injury prone.

If we bring him back, i will support, but he fits the "swing for the fences" part of Mindz' equation and requires the most rock-solid backup we can find. Kind of like Petr Mrazek, except the opposite.

I'm warming up to the idea of Varlamov and Reimer, or Varlamov with retention and Husso.

That's Varly's last 5 seasons. As likely as anyone to give us solid tandem goaltending. Husso is riskier, but is 27 and probably has 1A chops in there. Wouldn't trip if the contract was too rich there and we went with 1 yr of Reimer on the cheap instead, and just kicked the can down the road for a year.

I'm struggling to see the upside of bringing Jack back. He's right near the end of the typical goalies prime years, so if he's going to cost 4x4 on the low end, do we really want 4 million tied up into Jack's 34 yr old season when he's always been inconsistent, and always struggled with staying healthy? His performance is pretty indistinguishable from the Varly & Reimers of the world, so why take the risk inherent with Jack? If we wanted to ask the question "can Jack be the guy", I think he answered it this year...no, he probably can't. Not that it makes him a bad goalie, but if he probably lacks the mental makeup to be the guy, why are we risking real dollars and term on him at almost 31 yrs old?

Here is the Husso section from the article in the Athletic:

5. Ville Husso

Status: UFA

Feel like a bit of a gamble? Husso may be your guy. He’s coming off a strong season for the Blues, one that saw him swipe the No. 1 job from Binnington during the regular season. Husso posted a top-10 five-on-five save percentage (.926) and stopped 13 goals more than expected overall, a figure on par with Vezina Trophy finalist Juuse Saros. Husso is 6-foot-3 and more than 200 pounds, and he’s only 27. There’s upside potential here. Husso has played a grand total of 57 NHL games though, 40 of which came this season. Should the Leafs hitch their Stanley Cup wagon to someone so inexperienced? It would be quite a bet, that’s for sure. Husso is believed to be seeking more than $4.5 million a season with some term. If his price tag ends up slightly lower, on a three- or four-year deal, maybe he’s worth that bet?

Im not sure Comrie is much worse than Husso. I think he'll be a lot cheaper.

They all kinda suck tho.

I'm fine with Varly/Comrie

I don't think he'll be that much cheaper than the rumoured number for Husso though and lacks the higher end features of Husso's track record. So, less of a money gamble for less of a potential reward imo. But yeah, sure.

Jack is good. I wouldn’t be shocked with him getting paid average starter money. That’s what he is.

Mikky I isn’t know why anyone would give $5 mill. But I wouldn’t give him more than what he made last year so doesn’t matter.

Trotz defensive system must be considered on those last years
