TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

that too. I do think they are an even better defensive team now with these bottom roster moves(or can be, if the right ones are on the team anyway). I think the GA will be lower this season.

I started in on Wheeler but was too busy to follow it up. Burtch blocked me what did he say?
Narrative around the Leafs losing in the playoffs due to a lack of depth scoring is odd when last year in the playoffs they had:

2 goals from Kampf.
2 goals from Mikheyev.
2 goals from Muzzin.
1 goal from Blackwell.

Plus a combined 17 Gs from their top 6F and Rielly.

24 goals

TB only scored 23 goals in the series.

Their bottom end produce

Perry 2 goa
Paul 2 goal
Hagel 1 goa
Bellemare 1 goa
Maroon 1 goa
..
Colton scored 3 goals. That was big..

If you outscore your opponent and still lose the series, then it's sort of weird to say the problem was a lack of scoring goals.

Eventually you are just complaining about WHEN they were scored.

Which in hockey is pretty damn random.

Trying to say the new bottom 6 is worse than the old bottom 6 because they aren't guys like Kase or Spezza?

Also weird when last year Kase and Spezza combined for literally 0 playoff goals.

The media loves pointing at the talent on the roster as super flawed, but can't actually articulate what the players are doing specifically wrong in the playoffs other than losing.

Also odd when the same players who don't succeed are immediately praised if they succeed elsewhere

Zach Hyman was praised endlessly for all his goal scoring in last year's post season.

Yet as a Leaf in the playoffs he never scored more than 1 goal in any series, 5 total in 32 career playoff gp. 6.7% shooter.

In EDM last year he shot 16.4%. Not random at all amirite?

What is the reason they lose then?

Because they always manage to have the second best goaltending, and because their play in the bigger games is not good or disciplined enough yet. Sometimes in a series it comes down to that errant Galchenyuk pass or that Kerfoot lacrosse stick play. Or Kadri getting knocked out of the series. Or Campbell kicking out a juicy pizza pie to Nick Paul and getting posterized.

you can't be the team that makes that play every single year. sometimes it has to be the other guy and not you.

but it's always us.

so it's a team wide choking quality? what's the fix?

All solved by Matty and Marner putting up just a few more points in elimination games.

There's nothing broken. The best need to step up and be the best. Simple diagnosis, but impossible to treat, it needs to resolve itself.

You try to add more effective leadership and get better goaltending. And be sure to purge players who fall apart under pressure.

as for the fix for our two best players being a lot more ordinary in the playoffs...there is none.

Leadership is one of those invisible "Intangibles" I ignore.

The most hyped leaders in hockey the past few years have been Toews and Duncan Keith.

It really is beyond hilarious that in this team’s search for veteran leaderbeans, we went for both Patty Marleau & Joe Thornton.

The twin heart & soul of probably the biggest playoff underachieving team (relative to their run of regular season success) of the past couple of generations.

That fucking Marleau contract.
