From what I remember at the time, most people didn't care that McD was included, most people had written him off already.

I admit I had because I had read he wasn't amounting to much.

I thought he would of been decent top 4 , not a top pairing guy

very surprised we gave up the prospect when we picked up the bad contract and gave them cap relief , didnt make sense we should of got at least a first round pick

I firmly believe part of the reason McD was included was the fact David Fischer had yet to do anything and was already considered a bust and McD himself had begun to show signs of stagnation in his development so Gainey wanted to get something for him before he went full on Fischer and lost all value.

Or because we also had Subban and Weber ready to jump to NHL and Emelin was supposed to come over from KHL (he didn't that year though).
It's okay to give up prospects when you have enough of them - can't play them all at the same time.

Back in 2009 the Habs had literally nothing after PK, McD and Weber in terms of defensive prospects. Emelin was considered a lost cause by many and the next ranked D-prospects at the time were Mathieu Carle(7), David Fischer(8), Emelin(12) and a just drafted Mac Bennett(14). Even at the NHL level they weren't overly deep with Markov, Hamrlik, Gorges, Brisebois, Schneider, Komisarek, Bouillon and O'Byrne.

Obviously we have a very different recollection of the past.

The Habs loved Emelin and tried to bring him over for three seasons but he withheld for financial reasons. PK was one of the hottest prospects in the OHL and Weber was very strong as a first-year 20 y/o defenseman in Hamilton.

I'm not denying anything about PK or Weber at the time. It was the players after them and the players on the NHL roster at the time which featured no mainstays after Markov and Gorges. Gainey definitely didn't pick a prospect from an organizational strength.

Funny reading through this thread with all the usual suspects doing the gloom and doom routine and then....:lol

My reaction initially was "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu..." when I heard Higgins was going to New York & Gomez was coming back. Not even remotely happy.

But when I heard we included McDonagh... I think I had my head in my hands for a good half hour. It was a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.

Pavel Valentenko was seen as a prospect at the time. Had a pretty good first season in the Hammer. Habs had prospect from Euro like Thorp, US Kishel and Stejkal... never burst after the draft. Cameron Cepek abruptly end his career with bad injury in the AHL.
