It has to be the right deal, there's just not many of those out there I guess.Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell says.....
Presuming Tarasenko still doesn't want to play here, I'm not sure what you want him to have said thus far. Henrique is the only guy who has moved that would have been any kind of realistic fit hereMeanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell says.....
If GMDW ever were to make such a move wouldn’t it be this year or next considering the number of expiring contracts we have coming up and how different the roster will look at the end of next season?I don't at all see the Canes realistically trading away assets to rent Jake Guentzel for a playoff run, but maybe this is the deadline where we do something out of character.
Right. This year or next at least seem like the prime time to go all in. I'm not sure you do it without being a bit more optimistic about the goaltending though. If you sell the farm to get a couple of months of Guentzel and then the goaltending doesn't hold up then you've really screwed up down the road. But the general idea with that Dundon has been doing is that you smooth out those obvious windows with smarter, more disciplined contract management. Which kind of cuts that all in mentality off at the knees. Maybe one year he green lights a big swing ... who knows? He's certainly not risk averse. If GMDW ever were to make such a move wouldn’t it be this year or next considering the number of expiring contracts we have coming up and how different the roster will look at the end of next season?

And hey. Look around the league. How many times does the full court press at the deadline work anyway? When Vegas finally got their Cup it was in a year when they rode a 3rd string goalie and didn't really make a blockbuster trade for once. Barbashev was a nice deal for them, but that was hardly what you'd call shoving all your chips into the pot. Everything else they did was out of necessity
Disagree. Vegas looks awfully good in retrospect because it all resulted in a trophy, but they struggled to get traction all season last year before getting their crap together late. Locally we're seeing the Canes "struggle" but they've been in 2nd place in the Division basically all season even with terrible goaltending until fairly recently. It looks different because they have different styles, but it's really not all that different. There's nothing structurally wrong with this club and putting it together late in the season is 100% still on the table.Yes, but that Vegas team was much better than this hurricanes team is currently. They could ride a mediocre goalie because they could score against anyone. Carolina does not have that kind of lineup. At some point they are going to have to actually improve at the deadline unless they’re happy flaming out in the playoffs year after year.
KK is looking more and more like a turd as time moves on and just does not seem to have much in the give-a-shit meter. Sad after what the Canes invested in the guy but more and more he just looks so damn average most nights. I agree CMal that the center position is probably where the Canes need help the most right now.The Canes were being lumped in with multiple other playoff bound suiters for Jake Guentzel. I don't at all see the Canes realistically trading away assets to rent Jake Guentzel for a playoff run, but maybe this is the deadline where we do something out of character. Again though Guentzel doesn't play center which is where we probably need help the most at the forward position. We would also need to NOT include a top 6 forward in such a trade or it ends up really doing little to improve our roster.
Guentzel-Aho-Svechnikov
Turbo-Drury-Necas
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Noesen-KK-Bunting
Fast, Lemieux, Comtois
Swap Turbo and Bunting as desired.
That lineup, in theory, should offer the Canes advantages all over the ice against most teams. Even more so if somehow KK would get it going, which it doesn't look like is going to happen.
But forget about it, we are not going to outbid some of these other teams for Guentzel.
That’s a tidy bit of business for the Caps too. He only cost them a 5th, so they got a half a season out of him for a little more than the NHL minimum.Edmundson is not the player he was a couple of years ago, but that's still a solid get for the Leafs.

Poor Beuvillier ... maybe Nashville will finally be the team that gives him a little leash to run.Eliotte Friedman says the Blackhawks are sending Anthony Beuvillier to Nashville for a pick.
