I think the idea of Nonis being "marginalized" is also over-stated. He's just gone back to doing the same job he was hired to do in Toronto in the first place; handle the day-to-day duties of a GM, and be part of a front office team, while another guy (Burke then, Shanahan now) ultimately calls all the shots.
If I'm not mistaken, Carlyle had this year left on his deal. They gave him next year too, rather than just let him play out the string.
That's the whole point.
What was the reason to give a guy who had failed miserably to that point, and had only a year left on his deal which provided a perfect potential bridge to Babcock, an extension?
If the goal was to give him this last chance to see what happened, then you don't commit to yet another year beyond this one.
That 5 year extension he got for no reason was mind-boggling.
So he wasn't a lame duck, duh. Why do you care that MLSE threw away a bit of extra money on his contract?
