Some Thoughts on Dave Nonis

Nonis never had a problem being the #2 guy, but only to Burke, so we'll have to see how this thing plays out.

Nonis still has a major front office position in the NHL. He has the title. He has the paycheck. Its not a bad situation. There are only 30 GM jobs in the world.

Though getting fired with 3 years left on his deal would not be the worst.

Less mind-boggling than the extension Carlyle got.

Literally the stupidest thing anyone has ever done, ever, no exaggeration.

Agreed, that's why this organization is a laughingstock in the NHL! MLSE rewards failure, re-inking Carlyle last offseason despite the team losing 12 out of 14 of the games knocking them from a home ice position to out of the playoffs, any other coach would have been canned yet we shell out millions to ours.

The Leafs go on and on about accountability yet they don't practice what they preach, when a player/coach etc is successful then reward him but not when its failure.

No, that would be the contract Nonis signed Clarkson to.

That was another boneheaded move for sure on Nonis's end, but at least I can get the motive for him signing Clarkson. I truly don't understand why not only was Carlyle kept on but inked to 2 years and given millions, all of this despite 2 big collapses under his regime and the same year Shanahan comes on as president, usually when a coach screws up that badly he's canned and often times a president brings in his own GM/Coaches when hired.

I think the idea of Nonis being "marginalized" is also over-stated. He's just gone back to doing the same job he was hired to do in Toronto in the first place; handle the day-to-day duties of a GM, and be part of a front office team, while another guy (Burke then, Shanahan now) ultimately calls all the shots.

I don't think Nonis has the clout, authority, whatever you want to call it of an Assistant GM inside the current room despite his job title. He most definitely had that with Burke; they were a team.

If the plan was Babcock all along, there wasn't really any choice. Unless you bring in a new coach with the intent to fire them regardless of their performance, which has its own host of problems.

If I'm not mistaken, Carlyle had this year left on his deal. They gave him next year too, rather than just let him play out the string.

That's the whole point.

What was the reason to give a guy who had failed miserably to that point, and had only a year left on his deal which provided a perfect potential bridge to Babcock, an extension?

If the goal was to give him this last chance to see what happened, then you don't commit to yet another year beyond this one.

So he wasn't a lame duck, duh. Why do you care that MLSE threw away a bit of extra money on his contract?

I don't lose sleep over it. It was just beyond stupid to bring back the lame duck to suck for another year, not to mention to add term.

Who adds term to a lame duck??

Anyway, going in circles.

Yeah what a dumb idea to bring Caryle back, this team had to suck all year long with 2 coaches instead of 1.

But how could it be such a bad idea to give him an extension if it literally had no impact. The moves that can be fixed easily aren't the worst ones.

The "Lame Duck Coach" thing that exists in the NGHL is just silly. Why can't you have a coach with 1 year left? You let players play with 1 year left? It's just a silly myth.
