TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Tavares was solid and if I may say, underrated this year. My big concern though: He's 32 next year and entering year 5 of the deal. I thought we would have had much more success with him and Matthews 1-2 down the middle.
The angst over a PPG player in the regular season and playoffs is ridiculous. Acting like an 80 point player is our biggest problem is scapegoating at its finest. But it will go on all year and for two more after that unless the elite 100+ point guys show up late in the next playoff series.

PPG Tavares was hardly the worst overpay in the series, and the goalie battle was even steven.
Only because Vasi underperformed in Games 1-6. Under normal circumstances that particular match-up wouldn't even be close. Campbell isn't a #1 guy.

Tavares had a good year. I don't think anyone questions that. The issue is if he is too slow and bad defensively to play center anymore.

And obviously that he isn't worth $11 mill anymore, but nothing you can do about that.

Slow or no slow - and by the way I think he was playing through some kind of problem in the second half - Tavares is doing his job. He’s delivering more of less the same types of years for us as he did with the Isles before we signed him. We paid $11m for a PPG center and he’s delivered. Whether he’s delivering it with less footspeed after four years isn’t much of a concern. If he puts up 50-60 point seasons, then I start to worry. But not now.

Individual expected goals:

1. Matthews 3.84
2. Point 3.11
3. Mikheyev 3.07
4. Kucherov 2.95
5. Nylander 2.67
6. Marner 2.59
7. Tavares 2.57

Of course, the goal they took away from tavares doesn't count towards this stat in any way, because the whistle went so the play never happened.
lol@ "expected" goals.

The "expected" goal of this team was to win the Cup. It was the "expected" goal last year and the year before that. Expected goals are like verbal contracts: not worth the paper they aren't written on. The only thing that matters are actual goals and actual wins, not expected goals or moral victories.

0-10 in elimination games. It's like a grapefruit sized goiter on the face of the franchise. No fancy stat can cover it up.

Yeah, but he could be maximized if he was playing with a good center, so he could focus more down low in the o zone where he is elite and less down low in the d-zone where he isn't.

Willy and Kerfoot take care of the transition, but all of them stink defensively.

You see, you’re just trolling now. Rubbing salt. I also don’t put much value in that shit, but you’re having so much fucking fun.

The thing is, he's a smart player. Yeah he was never a great skater and even lost a step but his IQ is up there. Closest comparable to Wright so yeah, I'd be ecstatic with that.

The $11m is the issue.

I don’t disagree, he could be better that way, as an elite faceoff man who moves to the wing after the draw, but getting another 2C will be a challenge.

The Core 5 that I’ve been pushing for by moving Muzz’s salary was targeting another winger. But if we can make it another center, I’m in. However we add that fifth guy, do it. The answer is another expensive guy and more bargain binners and guys through the draft to fill in the gaps.

It’s not. It’s spent. He’s delivering as promised. There’s no point talking about it anymore.

It ain't trolling if it's true. And there's no salt to rub here. Saturday night is simply a thing that happened now. It's over. I'm merely trying to say that trotting out these useless stats does nothing to address the problem going forward. A stat like expected goals just sounds like a "coulda, woulda, shoulda" rationalization for failure and that's what actually needs to stop. Stats like that only serve to minimize the failure and present a case for maintaining a flawed status quo. It's the precise type of thinking that I have railed against on the Habs board for a decade. When my team doesn't perform to my standards I demand that people get fired/traded/bought out. I don't look for reasons why they should continue doing the same thing for another year.

I meant when looking at the overall picture. I read someone say something about 2 ~$7m players, a 2C and a 2LW. That would be better use no? Forget the Tavares aspect, looking only monetarily.
