pretty sure we'd need to have the replacement deal in our back pocket before moving Muzz out. The Leafs don't have anything to replace him with.

And if Keefe is staying and there is no place for Sandin/Liljegren, then they need to be moved for players we will use.

That he always followed the Leafs growing up and that this was painful or something like that. Now I can't remember exactly.

I tried to cut and paste the image into here, but it said it was too large so I gave up.

2.75 is the absolute maximum I would pay. preferably less. Backup goaltenders are not that valuable.

Sure, but there were periods this year where Holl was probably carrying Muzzin. He wasn't anywhere near his standard this season, has had injury issues for the last few years and is 33 now. All I'm saying is that the Muzz we remember being a top matchup guy may not consistently be a thing going forward either, whether we keep him or not.

Same message I had last summer. Had we traded him last summer and replaced him with our new Muzz, we might have ended up quite a ways ahead.

That's the thing. Gio's performance in the regular season for us was kinda spectacular.

12 points in 20 games (no PP time really) and +12. He was better than anything Muzzin gave us.

And while you're replacing an old guy with a way older guy, the way older guy is much more able overall, much more mobile, and much more healthy somehow. And comes at a fraction of the cost. And allows us to get a king's ransom in trade for Muzz.

To have Gio on a one year deal for cheap who can be your second pair LD or drop to third pair if Sandin can handle it, that's a crazy incredible luxury and opportunity that we can't let slip by. Instant replacement for Muzz who will likely provide more value than him next year. It's $5M bucks that we can use on a good forward to add to the group.

this is true, but at this point I'd rather take my chances with real Muzz than any hypothetical replacements

you really want to rely on a 39 yo as our 'shutdown' guy. I do not.

I also think we're at a point, as we demonstrated this year, that we only really need peak performance Muzz for the playoffs. obviously you want to have him playing at his best level all season, but we have the depth now to de facto load manage and deal with his annual injuries.

but when push comes to shove, we do not have anyone on the roster who can do what he does in the playoffs in terms of shutting down an opponent's top line. and Rielly sure as shit ain't the guy. Sandin may become the guy, but he ain't. and I don't trust Gio to be that guy. and I think you need that guy.
 
but at the same time, with each passing year the relative risk increases that he is done/declining. obviously the regular season this year raises some serious concerns. could also be a Niskanen type situation though. who knows.
 
also there is zero guarantee Gio doesn't drop off a cliff next season. I would be very hesitant to rely on him for any kind of real minutes.

at the age he is it happens suddenly in the NHL. maybe he has enough left in the tank by the playoffs, maybe he doesn't.
