No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

I’m not. I welcome it.

Only downside is it makes me feel so old that I followed this guy before the draft, have watched him for 10 years, and the new term would end when I’m in my early 50s. I mean, Jesus fucking Christ.

Something is fucked up when the Leafs seem to be the only team that has a war with star players inking

Big AAV , shorter terms , huge upfront money and all the off ice money granted to them

Nate and Pasta had their team by the nuts and inked team friendly deals fair deals
Thing is these guys can't leave. What the f*ck is Mitch going to do? He has the most endorsements in the entire NHL. No 7 year deal as a UFA will get him more money.

None of those teams had just signed an 11 million dollar free agent that all 3 kids ended up better than, to set the bar on the team while at the same time chirping to the media about "we can and we will" paint ourselves into a corner by making our entire organizational identity these 4 guys.

I do think though that their stats got them paid, not Tavares' contract. Look at the stats of the "Hometown discounts" Ottawa has gotten from their 40 ish and 50ish point players. If they can get 8+ per, I get Mitch getting 10.9 for 94 points in his ELC.
The issue is though, despite these massive signing bonuses and endorsements for many, they aren't giving Leafs a discount now. They have it made more than any players, but still want to get as much as they can. And it wasn't Dubas clearly as this is continuing.
Also, I think strongly there was a Babcock tax in those early years. Matthews usage was a freaking joke and cost him a ton of goals/points.

Yup , you called it from day 1 on the issue of the contract

It really is strange. Assumed at first it was just the classic Marner slow start, but we’re well beyond that at this point.

On the one hand, I wonder if it’s an injury.

On the other hand, I wonder how seriously Marner takes his training & conditioning compared to the other core guys. Nylander for example started off with us as a wee slim guy and has gotten progressively more jacked with each passing season. Whereas Mitch has the same 16 year-old boy’s build that he’s always had.

Because one thing that definitely goes away with age (unless you’re Phil Kessel) is the ability to maintain peak performance without really putting the work in.

they pretty clearly changed their offensive gameplan in a way that went from benefitting Marner (controlled entries with a high cycle focused on getting their wingers the puck between the d) to not playing to his strengths (more dump ins, triangle offense with the puck between the hash marks and corners)

That doesn’t explain it all but it’s pretty apparent that they’ve changed their offence.

Regardless of their record Ottawa is doing the right thing locking up their yutes coming out of ELC

They are all moveable and contracts are not problematic

Yes they are moveable, but that's not the goal here. They are supposed to be building to win a cup.
I'm not sure this rush to sign everyone long-term before they've done anything is working. I think teams like Ottawa and Buffalo have signed too many guys like that.

True but the contacts are not problematic

Plus you have 2 teams that cant attract players to go there

I would rather lock up my young core than risk losing them later

It may not work but you keep trying with young stars
