What if keeping Marner and adding Cowan is enough to get us over the hump...
You can't worry about what a guy might do once he leaves. The only important thing to remember is that he never would have done it if he had stayed. The fact that Hyman became great after leaving doesn't mean he'd have become great had he stayed. It's not the player, it's the culture of losing that prevails in Toronto. That's the thing, we'll never know if we let him go. And I'm sick of guys like Hyman, Kadri, and others leaving to become playoff warriors while we hold the bag with their replacements.
I'm still torn over the whole thing and probably will always be no matter which way we go. If I knew he'll take $14m and not a penny less from us, and we could get Bennet and Ekblad with that money instead, I'm good with it. If he takes $12M and we have healthy Matty, Cowan added, and a few other improvements on the roster to help us get over the hump, I probably still lean towards that.
