2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

If the Pens had $14M of space, then yeah, I could definitely see that being Dubas's top priority, allowing him to get back into the playoffs and giving Crosby another few shots at a late career cup.

And it looks like they have $24M of space with pretty much a full roster signed into next season...so how come no one is talking about it?

I don't even see anyone special expiring, so how do they even have so much room?

And looking at us, we only have 4 forwards signed beyond next season, and two of them are Kampf and Domi. Only 7 forward signed for next season (this includes Krok, Kampf, and Reaves). Kinda shocking.

Knies will be signing, Tavares too, but this should be a very different roster next season, especially if they're going to dump Krok and Kampf.

The pens are an interesting option... I don't know about the money situation in Pitt, but didn't marner work out this year with mack and Crosby? Maybe it would make Sid happy and I could see Dubas paying him just over 14. Hell give him the eighth year at 13 and get karlson thrown in...maybe at krok and whatever for karlson with some retention 😂
Oh and there's this.

That's the thing, we'll never know if we let him go. And I'm sick of guys like Hyman, Kadri, and others leaving to become playoff warriors while we hold the bag with their replacements.

I'm still torn over the whole thing and probably will always be no matter which way we go. If I knew he'll take $14m and not a penny less from us, and we could get Bennet and Ekblad with that money instead, I'm good with it. If he takes $12M and we have healthy Matty, Cowan added, and a few other improvements on the roster to help us get over the hump, I probably still lean towards that.

You can't worry about what a guy might do once he leaves. The only important thing to remember is that he never would have done it if he had stayed. The fact that Hyman became great after leaving doesn't mean he'd have become great had he stayed. It's not the player, it's the culture of losing that prevails in Toronto.

McDavid could go UFA and sign with the Leafs tomorrow and I guarantee you he'd immediately start playing like shit. He'd be just one more overpaid underachiever like Marner and Matthews are now. It's about the culture, not the players. That's why players immediately get better when they leave and immediately get worse when they arrive. Because the organization is a shitpile.
