2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

RBA said they’re still hopeful that Hamilton will play tomorrow. He said practice today will be the key. He also said their special teams are “super special”, so for the love of all that is holy, stay out of the box. The Canes gave the Rangers 14 power plays, but held them to only 1 goal. Can't give away an average of 5 per game and survive the Bruins, no matter how badly they’re misfiring right now.

Bergeron’s line and their PP killed us last year. That line did neither jack nor squat in the round robin, Bergeron had 1 assist and Marchand and Pastrnak were held off the score sheet. At some point they’re going to remember who they are, so it will be key to control that line. Boston has “home” ice so it will be interesting to see who Cassidy matches them up with.
I would assume he'd go with "good on good" and try to keep them away from Staal's line. That's what he did when we played them in Boston back in December, but that was a long flipping time ago and I can't even remember if Brindy was going with the full heavy version of the first line (including Svech) back then. I like Carolina's 3rd line to do some damage if the Bruin's go that way, but I do feel like the bigger issue for Carolina is just playing like you mean it. Just go play aggressive, possession hockey and make them earn it.

Sara's article today articulated that the Bruins were pretty much treating the round robin games as a time to work on certain aspects of their game. So, I want to see the Canes play a series against Detroit or something

All due respect to everybody involved, but so what? Carolina had three games to "work on stuff" against the Rangers. And while working on their stuff, the Bs largely looked like crap while the Canes looked pretty good. Neither development means much if anything once we get to the next game. Playing possum in this league is tricky business ... and largely it's mythical, post disappointment spin. When you play poorly, you lose. Period. Doesn't mean you'll play poorly the next time out.

By the way, on NHL network they just showed how they are handling the ads on the boards. Not virtual, they are really manually changing the ads before each game around the boards. The ads for each team were all boxed and ready to use.

There's no way it could have been "green screened" on the boards. Why it's not a problem on the glass behind the nets is questionable to me. Seems like the puck would get lost on a green rectangle canvass.

Canes feeling good tonight with a 87.5% chance of securing the Leafs first round pick and getting the 13th or 14th overall pick in the draft!!! Tidy little bit of great GM work by Waddell and company for taking on the Patty Marleau cap space and some cash!

The ads on the glass only showed up on the FSCR broadcasts, they weren’t visible on any of the NBCSN games.

Well ... if I'm honest, I'm not feeling that freaking good about it. If the Leafs end up with No. 1 and Carolina doesn't get out of the next round then we'll have blown two first rounders this year with not a heck of a lot to show for it. Yeah, you'd be set up for 2 firsts next year ... that's a long way down the road.

Nah...I see little difference between us picking 13th in 2020 draft or having no first rounder in 2020 draft and picking something like 19th (Toronto's) and 31st (ours) in the 2021 draft. Either way that Toronto pick is 3+ years away from being an NHL factor for us anyway.

Who knows, Toronto might completely flub up if they end up with the 2020 first overall pick and miss the playoffs next season giving us a 2021 lottery play.

The Leafs are not winning the first overall pick, and frankly, this really might end up being a pretty good player at 13...and it turned out better with this upside down pandemic draft for the Canes than it would have following the regular season rules and regular playoff seeding. A 13th overall pick for a salary cap trade dump is pretty outstanding. If the Canes wanted to really branch out, you could even grab that Russian phenom goalie prospect in Askarov at 13...the assessment on that kid is off the charts.

Dundon has sworn we will never ever draft a Dman in the 1st round again, I don't think he has made the same statement about a goalie. That would be a pretty bold move (I know Askarov has a ton of hype). I dunno how I would feel about that.

We all bitch and moan in here about never having a true #1 in net...is this the year we roll the dice? Yeah, a goalie in the first round is always a bit of a gamble...but some have called this guy a generational goaltender.

Pronman from the Athletic with his take: The toolkit, the brain and the performance over a long period of time point to a unique goalie prospect. I may be wrong on him. Goalies are very hard to project, and even when they get to the league, even the best goaltenders’ performances fluctuate wildly, making them at times unreliable. But I think there’s something different about Askarov. I think he’s going to be one of the top goaltenders in the NHL."

The Askarov kid's rep seems roughly equal to Spencer Knight's rep at the same stage, and he went 13th to Florida last year. Nobody beefed about that pick, and nobody would beef if Carolina took a really good looking goaltender prospect in the same spot. Frankly, I'm with CC on this and I was hoping we'd trade up to take a shot at Knight last year. If you never draft a guy with the freaking potential to be a franchise keeper, then you're never going to have one without paying through the nose. Period. If you like him, draft him.

The first mock draft I saw, from Cory Pronman at The Athletic, had Askarov going #9 to the Wild. He has the Canes taking Portland Center Seth Jarvis. He’s small-ish at 5’10”, 172 lbs. but he had 42 goals, 56 assists in 58 games. Pronman says “he’s full of speed, skill and hockey sense”. He was 3rd in goals, tied for 5th in assists and 2nd in points in the WHL. He also likes Jack Quinn, a RW from Ottawa. He’s a right shot, 6’0”, 176 lbs. He had 52 goals in 57 games, 2nd in the league behind Nick Robertson, who played 4 games for the Leafs in the qualifying round.

Consensus on the Canes seems to be that they'll take the best right shot available. Makes sense given our roster and prospect pool, but it seems a little simple for a working theory. I like the goaltender and you know that the number of "hockey men" involved generally means that even a really good goaltending prospect will slip a few notches.

Interesting that Bill Guerin in Minnesota just threw his goalies under the bus after the play-in round defeat...so taking Askarov at 9 for the Wild kinda makes sense if what Habsy noted is true and Askarov is almost ready now to step into an NHL roster spot.

Guerin probably ought to throw his goalies under a bus ... they're fairly terrible.

Dubnyk had a pretty good 3 year run after the Wild picked him up from Arizona. Even his last 2 years weren’t bad, his save % was .916 as his GAA went over 2.50. But he’s 34 and has 1 more year at a $4.3 million cap hit with a NTC that lets him list 19 teams he’ll accept a trade too. Stalock is a career backup, the 38 games he played this year were the most he's ever played in a season and the first time he’s played more than 28 games in a season. He’s also 33, and has 2 more years at $785k.
