2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

And another. Vancouver shut out Vegas 4-0 to force game 7 in that series. Today has Stars/Avs at 4 on USA and Vegas/Canucks at 9 on NBCSN. Tomorrow is Flyers/Isles at 7:30. And the Western Conference Final starts Sunday. The Eastern Final starts on Monday

That Vegas series is so interesting. Knights have put themselves in the position of possibly losing a flukey game seven. Good stuff.

I would play Fleury.

By the way, Nicolas Roy is having himself a pretty solid playoffs. 14 Games, 1 Goal, 5 assists, 36 hits, over 15 minutes per game. His biggest issue has been faceoffs...he is 3rd on the team in faceoffs taken and has only won 45.4% of them. William Karlsson takes more faceoffs for Vegas than anyone else and he is at 40.4%. As a team Vegas has won only 43.9% of their faceoffs in the playoffs. I'm sure that is not helping. Vancouver was 2nd in the league in Faceoff% in the regular season, so that is as factor.

Roy isn’t a great skater and maybe that tipped the balance to trade him rather than keep him. Unless, of course Vegas asked for him specifically. He’s also 3rd among forwards in PK ice time per game. But if the choice came down to Roy or Geekie, IMO Waddell made the right decision.

Not a DeBoer fan, so, while I like the Vegas team in general, him as coach would take the sting out of them losing. I guess the thing you don't want to be is the fashionable pick after an earlier series (us, Vegas, ?)

I think Roy was always going to be an effective NHL center, the issue was always going to be where his ceiling ended up being. And yeah, the skating is an issue with that. He's probably a 3rd line center who can fill up a bit and get some 2nd unit PP time going forward. Carolina's issue with him was mostly timing, I think. They wanted/needed somebody who was more mature and could drive a line while Necas got broken in. Huala (and then Trochek) fit that bill a LOT more, and Roy would have tipped the scales to youth a bit too much for my tastes. And yeah, having Geekie behind him in the pipeline certainly didn't help his case for sticking in Raleigh. But he's a good young player doing a good job on a good team ... no surprise there.

the Vegas Vancouver game is unreal. Vancouver is getting flogged and even their PP's looked lifeless Somehow Demko denies Vegas halfway through the third.

Yeah he's been insane. Vancouver has no business being in this game let alone series playing like they are.

VGK got a PP goal with about 6 to go.
Get an EN to practically end it. and a second with less then 10 seconds.
Demko only let up 2 goals.. in 3 games (started)

Vancouver had the perfect playoff run if their No. 1 goal was to make their goalies a bunch of money. Markstrom is going to get over-paid big time as a UFA, and the shine off of Demko's appearances will probably last longer than that bridge deal he signed in 2019. Otherwise ... fix your D guys. And quit over-paying for grunts like Beagle. Seriously, that roster is a mess. There's so much money and term tied up to nonsense that there's really not much you can do other than figure a few things out year to year. Loui Eriksson, our old friend Brandon Sutter, Beagle, Tyler Myers and freaking Jordie Benn? Are you serious with those guys? And together they eat up over $20 million in cap hit, while producing sweet FA.

Vancouver has $6 million in dead money too, unless Sven Baertschi somehow makes the team next year. They have more than $2 million of his salary buried and $1 million of Ryan Spooner’s buyout for 1 more year and $3 million of Luongo’s recapture penalty for 2 more years.

Yup ... talk about running hot and cold. Jim Benning has made some really good decisions, developed some really good young talent and made a few impactful moves (JT Miller turned out to be a gem) .... but it's all weighed down by a series of horrible free agent signings and contracts that robs them of all flexibility to get better.

Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston said that the Arizona Coyotes have had discussions with Pierre McGuire about their vacant GM job. They’ve also talked to Jason Karmanos.

Anything that gets him off the air is OK with me

Now that the Islanders have gotten rid of the Flyers like I hoped, time for Tampa to get rid of them. Sorry, too many obnoxious Islanders fans, I don't need them to have a reason to be more obnoxious.

Jason Karmanos was purely a contracts guy when he was in the Hurricanes front office, and by all accounts he was pretty good at it. God know what Rutherford has actually had him doing in Pittsburgh, because nobody was buying the analytics thing. I presume he was doing general business stuff, same as usual.

And here's the thing ... he's still more qualified than McPlankton, who hasn't been in a front office and 2o-something years and sucked at it back then.

Jon Cooper says that Steven Stamkos is out for the Eastern Conference Final. Kucherov is available.
