2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston said that the Arizona Coyotes have had discussions with Pierre McGuire about their vacant GM job. They’ve also talked to Jason Karmanos.

Anything that gets him off the air is OK with me

One of the best things about the playoffs so far is having Pierre and Ken Albert stuck out west and Milbury ejected.

They‘re still calling the west, Forslund, Olczyk and Boucher are calling the East from inside the bubble.

Game 1 in the West was ... ugh. Vegas took a bit to get going and Dallas was Dallas. I feel like everyone is deserving of being where they are, but these matchups are unfortunate in that we've got a couple of teams in Dallas and NYI that don't mind playing the role of wet blanket. For my own enjoyment, I'd like to see both fo those teams burn in a tire fire but here's guessing one of them will gatecrash the Final.

I turned it on just after the Islanders scored and turned it off after the first. It seemed like the Bolts had 90% of the zone time in the first period. I see from the final that it didn’t get any better. Point and Kucherov each had 5 points, Shattenkirk and Hedman each had 3. Johnson and Cernak were improbably -1 on the night.

I looked at one of those shot pressure graphics and it was terrifying through the mid-point of the game. Tampa didn't just dominate, they embarrassed the most cohesive team defense in the East. Trotz and his boys will probably figure out how to throw a wet blanket over that Tampa attack eventually, but woof ... that was ugly, and it might just be a repeat of the same thing that happened to NYI last year. While Carolina never really blew them up to that degree, the Isles did well and truly hit their glass ceiling in the 2nd round against the Canes. It's 100% a team with a hard ceiling, that's for sure. They're well built to play that system, but sooner or later they run out of "more to give."

Interested to see how Vegas adjusts tonight in Game 2 against Dallas. The Stars really threw a monkey wrench into the Knight's low cycle game, and they never really got comfortable in possession in Game 1. Vegas is as balanced up front as anybody in the league, but they need to get their possession game going to make it pay off. I'll be watching to see if DeBoer has any twists up his sleeve, because Vegas either needs to find a way to get their grind on down low, or else find a way to get the transition tempo dialed up about 5 notches.

2 award updates:

Matt Dumba wins the King Clancy
Bobby Ryan wins the Masterton.
No real issues with either of those ... although I suspect that the Masterton results might have been different if the voting had taken place after Oscar Lindblom returned the the lineup following his cancer treatments. That kind of thing tends to trump a "fought through rehab" story. Dumba? Hell yes.

A lot of tweets today noting the draft will now be held on October 6-7, but many comments note that as the date set when the CBA was ratified.

In any event, the draft will have round 1 on October 6, rounds 2-7 on October 7. Free agency opens up on October 9.

Tampa does not have a new TV guy so maybe they have hired Forslund and won't announce it until the playoffs are over. Or maybe they are still talking to other guys.

OK ... Vegas came out and did Vegas things in Game 2 against Dallas, chasing Khudobin and winning 3-0. I think (hah!) order will be restored in that one over time and Vegas will end up taking it home. Too much team speed, too much balance, and better goaltending.

It'll be interesting to see what the Islanders have for a response to Tampa tonight. They really need to do something to re-establish their footing in that series or else they could end up getting swept out of the playoffs two years in a row.

The ending of Game 2 in the Tampa/Isles series ... woof. Tampa managed the dagger even with a full MASH tent by the end of the game, and also managed to win while allowing NYI to play exactly the game they wanted to play. That's cold, man.

I also haven’t seen if Killorn was called to the principal’s office either. If Point can’t go and Killorn is suspended for game 3, they might have some problems.

Killorn got hurt anyway. No guarantee either of them can go in Game 3.

Tampa's deep at the NHL level, but their "other" depth sort of sucks, and they're already playing without Stamkos. If those two can't go, we're talking about dipping down to the likes of Carter Verhaeghe and Mitchell Stephens. Ooof.
