2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

The Leafs placed goalie Matt Murray on LTIR with an adductor injury. Erik Kallgren has been recalled. One week in and the season is lost.

The Caps signed UFA Sonny Milano, 1 year/$750k. He was non-tendered by the Ducks at the end of a 2 year/$3.4 million contract. He had 14g, 20a in 66 games last year.

I feel bad for Murray but I will laugh at the leafs for choosing him over Campbell
Yeah. Murray has a track record of being good in the playoffs, and I'm fairly certain that was the tipping point for the Leafs. He's also got a track record of being fragile and unreliable in the regular season, so ...

Look. For the Dubas regime in Toronto, it's playoff success or bust at this point. Murray was 100% a nod to that. If they get bounced early yet again, the rest of that contract will be some other GM's problem.

The Leafs will easily make the playoffs with well over 100 points no matter how bad their regular season goaltending ends up. Murray, Samsonov, Kallgren, Wall, it really doesn't matter. The PLAYOFFS is all the really matters for the Leafs. That is where I'm sure they are hoping Matt Murray might turn back the clock at the right time.

Even when it comes to playoff time though, the Leafs could win with subpar goaltending as long as their stars don't become invisible at the wrong time.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has a hearing today for the 2 hand chop below. He got a 2 minute minor for high sticking.

The NHL could do so much to tighten up dangerous player behavior if they would just get serious about supplemental discipline. Again, that's not as bad as it looks, probably, but it's still freaking loose and dangerous stick swinging for no reason other than to just whack a guy with a stick. It's not a "hockey play" by even the loosest definition. Nobody on EARTH is going to complain if you go 2-3 games on that ... other that the Caps ... and screw them, given recent history.

It wasn't good but at least the puck was there... He deserved getting called for it.. it also didn't hit a guy in the face..
I guess Kuznetzov didn’t try to hit him in the face. Necas slash was almost the same. He got hit. He was upset about it and or it hurt and he reacted with a hard slash unrelated to the puck or a hockey play. Should be the same result.

Unless the suspension was not based on a malicious slash but rather making contact with the head. In which case 2 Kraken players should get suspended for yhe 2 separate hits to Jarvis’ face.

the league is a joke on this stuff. You can’t just take a swing at someone in anger and it just be 2 minutes. That crap needs to go. They are going to be 100% screwed by lawsuits from guys who get their brains scrambled after the league and the whole world knows the danger of concussions and the league has done literally nothing to minimize the danger to the players. You can’t remove all the danger but you have to at least make an effort.

After a Board of Governors meeting, Bettman tells the media that the players escrow balance will likely be paid off by the end of this season and will result in a $4 million cap bump next year. That’s at least 2 years earlier than expected. But if it’s not paid off, there will on,y be a $1 million increase.

I'm sure there are several guys around the league thinking, "Great! A $4 million bump coming *my* way!" right now

You could stop there. Heck, you could start there.

There's some stuff that the NHL as currently constituted is NEVER going to get. This commissioner and this set of owners just isn't on the same page on player safety as ... you know ... people who actually care about the safety of the players.
