2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

I'm sure there are several guys around the league thinking, "Great! A $4 million bump coming *my* way!" right now
A couple of them might even be correct. Timing is everything. The hottest UFA going in to this summer is gonna get PAID

You could stop there. Heck, you could start there.

There's some stuff that the NHL as currently constituted is NEVER going to get. This commissioner and this set of owners just isn't on the same page on player safety as ... you know ... people who actually care about the safety of the players.
Who cares about the safety of the players? I realize the NHLPA has to represent all their members, but they’re always more concerned for the offender than whomever was injured by a dirty hit. Is some of it reflexive? Sure, in their eyes anything Bettman and DOPS do in a vacuum is inherently suspect. But maybe if they let a lengthy suspension go unchallenged, the Wilsons and Kadris will think twice.

WAY too early heat check ...

Philly and Dallas have to be feeling good about solid starts ... Philly because they suck and Dallas because they always start the season like they suck. Buffalo too, but they're always good early. Their heat check comes in November.

On the other end of the spectrum ... we find Minnesota, Vancouver, Tamp and Ottawa to varying degrees. Tampa surely feels like this is a blip, and it probably is, but they've really been awful. Otherwise, those are all teams with actual expectations (yes, including Ottawa) that seem surprised to be playing games that count. San Jose too, but I think everyone pretty much expected that.

The NHLPA has an inherent conflict of interest in those situations. The league does NOT.

Tampa blowing a 2-0 lead on home ice to the woeful Flyers has to sting...and I dont want to hear anyone try the sell that Philly team is suddenly a playoff team just because Tortorella is suddenly holding those guys accountable in the defensive zone. Three times last night the ESPN guys had to mention that TDA and Torts are spitting images of each other and it's a match made in heaven...

Wait. Wasn't it you who said let's not do that?

About individual players, yes. If Carolina had started 0-3 (especially against those 3 teams) I'd be mildly concerned, as would you ... one would assume. You'll notice I didn't suggest anyone get fired into the sun or anything over a bad start, or that we fire up the parade in Philly.

Tampa has grown accustomed to poor starts, but they really have looked rough thus far. I'm sure they'll find their legs eventually.

Panthers dman Aaron Ekblad is going on LTIR with a grade 2 groin strain. With Weegar in Calgary, that leaves them with Gustav Forsling, Radko Gudas and Marc Staal, Brandon Montour, Matt Kiersted and Josh Mahura, who played 79 games for Anaheim over 4 seasons

Whatever happened with Eric Staal down there? He's still listed as being on PTO on CapFriendly... is he just hanging out at bro's house waiting for an injury to one of their forwards?

Florida didn't have any cap room to sign Eric Staal, but does want to sign him. They actually NOW have some cap room temporarily as Ekblad just got place on LTIR today (not sure how long he will be out, "not a full season injury" is all I've heard.

Florida is gonna have to make a move for a defenseman with Ekblad out. Of their remaining crew, Forsling and Montour can carry big minutes but the rest of those guys not so much. They badly need a rightie too. Wonder how they'd feel about Bear? He's no Ekblad, but he can carry some minutes and isn't a total train wreck. I hear he's available too.

Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out for 3 months. He had surgery in March and recovered for the playoffs but re-injured the knee during off season training. He hasn’t played this season after missing all of training camp.

They signed him today, 1 year/$750k. It’s a 35+ contract, so there could be some bonuses in there too but CapFriendly hasn’t been updated with them if they exist.

Phil Kessel broke Keith Yandle’s iron man streak last night, playing in his 990th consecutive game, a streak that started with the Leafs in 2009. Remember, he’s a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2006. He also became the 13th American born player to hit 400 goals. Among active players, only Patrick Kane, Joe Pavelski and Zach Parise have more.

Sens may lose center Josh Norris for the season with a lower body injury. He has 2 points in 5 games but is coming off a breakout 35 goal season last year.

Despite all the hotdog jokes, Phil is a legend.
