2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

By points percentage...

Pittsburgh .563
Detroit .554
NY Islanders .549
Buffalo .545
Florida .533
Washington .525
Ottawa .518

IMO, too many teams to jump with three point games.

Still no reason for them not to try to improve their team at the deadline.

Just make it to the playoffs and let the hockey gods take it from there, right? I mean, why not?

The Sens are having a bad season, but 1) they are within striking distance of a wild card spot, and 2) they are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
They are also for sale, and the current owners want to show prospective buyers that they're close to competing. Think of it like painting the walls and replacing the carpet when you put your house on the market. Is the new owner likely to love your color choices? No, but it shows that you put in some effort at keeping things nice.

In other words, they're trying to polish the turd! :ROFLMAO:
But still, go for it!

I agree with hockeylover for sure on this one. Yes 6 points out seems close, but it's really not close when there are that many teams to jump over with 20 something games left for everyone to play. SOMEONE out of NYI, FLA, PIT, DET, WAS, BUF is earning points every night, and as hockeylover noted, some of those nights when those teams play each other BOTH teams are going to earn points in the NHLs screwed up system.

Ottawa has to get ahead of 5 those teams when they are already 6 points in the hole for that last wild card spot. Impossible? No. Likely? Definitely not. They would have to go on a serious heater the rest of the season and hope that none of those other teams go on a 'not quite as hot as Ottawa heater' the rest of the season. That doesn't mean trading for Meier as a 'today and long term' addition isn't a sensible thing to do. But it would really be more about tomorrow, because today Ottawa making the playoffs is up against a serious math problem.

They also have DeBrincat to deal with this summer. He’s a RFA with arbitration rights. He has a $6.4 million cap hit, but his actual this year is $9 million.

Yup.

Also, any bad to mediocre team with a crappy defense (a shockingly large number of teams) that isn't involved in Chychrun talks is bananas. He's a decent all-rounder who can score a bit and competently run a power play. And he's signed for two more years at a below market wage. There should be a line a mile long for a player like that even if he's not "the guy."

He makes a ton of sense for them. And one of the talking heads tweeted about how they have the green light to improve the team as long as it's a money in, money out sorta thing. I think Chychrun is even cheaper than Zaitsev in actual dollars.

Yup. Chychrun makes very little sense for most of the contenders, but all kinds of sense for basically every middling team trying to legitimately improve.

Looks like the Craps are throwing in the towel. Orlov and Hathaway to the Booins. Good to see they’re revisiting their thug roots by getting Hathaway.

Caps get Craig Smith, a 2023 1st, a 2024 3rd and an 2025 2nd. Boston also got forward prospect Andrei Svetlakov. The Wild picked up a 2023 5th rounder from the Bruins for picking up half of Orlov’s cap hit.

That’s ridiculous overpayment by the Bruins.

Edit: Caps retain half of Orlov’s cap hit, Wild retain 25%

The Canes hopefully do more with this year’s cap space than bring in another Max Doxi. We are fast but not really big and Jarvis, Svech and Necas can be streaky offensively. We need to to get some of the pressure off those three guys.

Brad Marchand doing Brad Marchand things. Wanna bet we don’t hear a peep from Player Safety?

Don’t look now, but the 2nd wild card in the east is the Detroit Red Wings. They’re tied with Florida with 3 games in hand and 3 points behind the Isles with 4 games in hand.

Well, at least it cost them something. Because while Orlov has declined a bit, he's still one of the best shot suppressing D's in the league and is still very good at triggering the break. He gives them another legit option to soak up minutes next to McAvoy or to elevate Carlo's second pairing. Hathaway is whatever (mostly a bunch of distracting noise), but adding Orlov to that blue line group is significant if they can get him integrated in their systems. This move was NOT good news for Carolina, that's for sure.
